New York City is celebrating Juneteenth under partly sunny skies with a high near 80°F — a comfortable, breezy holiday made for outdoor plans, as long as you keep your feet out of the ocean.
Today’s Setup
High pressure is building in from the west, shoving out an upper low that’s been draped over eastern Canada. Expect a mix of sun and clouds through the day, temperatures peaking near 80°F then backing off to around 77°F by afternoon. West winds of 12 to 15 mph keep things feeling fresh rather than muggy. Tonight clears out nicely — mostly clear skies with a low around 66°F, though winds hold at 13 to 16 mph through the overnight.
Best Window To Be Outside
Late morning through early afternoon is your sweet spot. Central Park, the Hudson River Greenway, and Prospect Park will all be in great shape for picnics, pickup games, or a Juneteenth celebration. Pack a portable bluetooth speaker and make an afternoon of it.
Wind and Beach Risk
Here’s the big caveat: the National Weather Service has a high rip current risk in effect for all NYC-area ocean beaches through this evening. Lingering 4–5 ft southerly swells are generating 3 to 6 ft of breaking surf, highest along eastern Long Island shores. Stay out of the water at Jones Beach and the Rockaways unless a lifeguard is on duty. The risk drops to moderate Saturday as swells subside. For a safer backyard water day, a 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge with Cooler for just $24 is a solid alternative.
Westerly gusts of 20–25 mph are expected Saturday afternoon as the boundary layer mixes out. A pop-up canopy tent with weights is the move if you’re hosting outdoors, and outdoor furniture covers will protect your patio setup when those gusts roll through overnight.
Gameday Weather: Yankees vs. Reds
The New York Yankees host the Cincinnati Reds at Yankee Stadium today (June 19), Saturday (June 20), and Sunday (June 21). All three games get excellent conditions: partly sunny to full sun, 79–80°F, zero rain. Dress the part with a New York Yankees jersey and a New York Yankees fitted cap to handle the afternoon bleacher sun. Still need seats? Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub.
Heading to the theater instead? Harry Potter and the Cursed Child plays at the Lyric Theatre tonight — clear skies, no umbrella needed. Saturday night, Hamilton takes the stage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre under equally comfortable conditions.
Fire Up the Grill
It’s Juneteenth, it’s nearly 80°F, and the winds are blowing from the west — textbook grilling weather. Burgers, steaks, grilled chicken with corn on the cob, all of it works. An instant-read meat thermometer takes the guesswork out of the cook, and a grill brush and scraper set has your grates ready in minutes. Still shopping for Father’s Day? A Father’s Day grilling set is a clutch last-minute find. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s cookout delivered right to your door.
Next Few Days
Saturday and Sunday are both sunny and near 79°F — the New York City weather forecast is about as clean as a summer weekend gets. Monday is a different story: the National Weather Service is tracking low pressure tracking east from the Rockies, bringing heavy rain and possible thunderstorms Monday and into Monday evening. Dewpoints climb late Sunday as that system approaches. Savor every hour of this gorgeous stretch — and check back Sunday for updated storm timing.
