Minneapolis–St. Paul is starting Juneteenth with partly sunny skies and a high near 74°F — but afternoon thunderstorms are on the way, so get your outdoor plans wrapped up before noon.
Today’s Setup
A potent shortwave trough is pushing southeast across Minnesota today, according to the National Weather Service office in Chanhassen. Morning hours look mostly clear, giving you a solid window at Bde Maka Ska, Minnehaha Falls, or along the Mississippi River Trail before the atmosphere turns hostile. A slight chance of rain showers develops around noon to 1 PM CT, then organized showers and thunderstorms become likely from 1 PM into the 4 PM CT hour and beyond — 80% precipitation chance overall. West-southwest wind stays light at 0 to 10 mph.
Thunderstorm Risk This Afternoon
The National Weather Service has flagged a Level 1 out of 5 (marginal) risk for severe thunderstorms. June dew points are on the dry side, but cold air aloft compensates and will generate enough instability during peak afternoon heating to support scattered storms capable of marginally severe hail and gusty winds. If you’re at any open-air Juneteenth events near Lake Harriet, Theodore Wirth Park, or anywhere else without quick shelter, keep your weather app handy and be ready to move indoors between 1–4 PM CT.
Best Window To Be Outside
Go early and go big. Theodore Wirth Park, Harriet Island Regional Park, and Boom Island Park should all be lovely through mid-morning. The storm system pushes east of the metro by mid-evening, and skies clear nicely overnight — low around 54°F with a WNW breeze at 5 to 10 mph. Late-night plans on Juneteenth look fine.
What To Wear Or Bring
A packable rain jacket is the move today — stash it in your bag this morning and you’ll thank yourself at 2 PM. A compact travel umbrella is worth grabbing too if you’re heading downtown or to the Warehouse District tonight. If the rain lingers into your evening walk, rain boot shoe covers will keep your footwear dry on wet sidewalks. Heading to an outdoor gear deals section for last-minute picks is always a good call before a storm day.
Tonight’s Events
The indoor calendar tonight is looking good regardless of the weather. Echo & the Bunnymen play The Fillmore Minneapolis tonight — by showtime, storms should be well east of the metro. Holly Humberstone is also at Varsity Theater. Tomorrow, Saturday, the skies flip completely: Don Toliver brings the Octane Tour to Target Center under sunny 76°F skies — about as good as concert weather gets in June. Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub if you’re still deciding.
Rainy Afternoon Dinner
This afternoon was made for slow cooker chili or a thick beef stew. Load everything up before noon, let it go all afternoon, and dinner is waiting when the storms pass. A programmable slow cooker handles the whole day hands-free, or fire up an enameled cast iron Dutch oven on the stovetop if you prefer a more hands-on approach. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Saturday is the reward: sunny, high near 76°F, northwest breeze around 5 mph — one of the prettier days of the month. Sunday, June 21, the Minnesota Lynx host the Washington Mystics at Target Center. Then Monday, June 22, the Minnesota Twins face the Los Angeles Dodgers at Target Field for Native American Heritage Night — a great occasion to sport a Minnesota Twins jersey or pick up a Minnesota Twins fitted cap before the first pitch. Find tickets on StubHub or Get tickets on SeatGeek. The National Weather Service says temperatures will gradually warm back toward near-normal highs around 80°F by late next week.
