Miami is kicking off Wednesday, May 20 sunny and warm with a high near 85°F — but heat and rip currents are the real story today. Check the full Miami weather forecast before heading out, and read on for everything you need to plan your day.

Today’s Setup

A strong upper-level ridge is locking in sunshine across South Florida, with steady east winds around 13 mph off the Atlantic. The National Weather Service notes drier air working into the mid-levels is keeping storm coverage unusually low — there’s only a 20% chance of a shower or brief thunderstorm before 2 PM ET, mainly inland and along sea-breeze boundaries. After that, expect wall-to-wall sun. Tonight stays muggy and partly cloudy, dropping to around 81°F.

Best Window To Be Outside

Morning is your sweet spot. A walk along the Bayfront Park waterfront, an early round at a Coral Gables course (the Callaway Big Bertha 23 Fairway Wood — $150 shipped is a solid mid-season pickup), or a stroll through Wynwood — all great before 11 AM. After that, heat indices climb into the upper 90s to near 100°F. The National Weather Service has issued a Moderate HeatRisk for all South Florida urban areas through the end of the week. Stay hydrated, find shade, and check on neighbors without reliable A/C.

Heat and Rip Current Risk

Two hazards to keep on your radar. First, rip currents are rated HIGH along the Atlantic coast through this evening — that means Miami Beach, Haulover, and Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. Swim near a lifeguard, and if you get caught in a rip, swim parallel to shore before heading in — never fight it head-on. Second, the urban heat in concrete-heavy areas like Brickell and downtown will feel oppressive by afternoon. Pace yourself.

Marlins and Events This Week

The Miami Marlins host the Atlanta Braves tonight (May 20) at loanDepot park. By first pitch, temps should be in the low 80s with that east breeze making it bearable — and the slight storm window closes well before game time. Grab a Miami Marlins jersey or Miami Marlins fitted cap to rep the Fish, and Get tickets on SeatGeek if you’re still hunting seats. The Braves series wraps Thursday before the Mets come to town Friday and Saturday.

For concert fans: Cazzu: LATINAJE EN VIVO hits Hard Rock Live Thursday night, then Reggae Fest Presents Alkaline takes Kaseya Center Friday, and Carlos Vives - Tour Al Sol closes out the weekend at Kaseya Center on Saturday. Find tickets on StubHub for any of these.

What To Wear or Bring

With a slim early rain chance, toss a compact travel umbrella or packable rain jacket in your bag if you’re heading out before noon. After that, light breathable fabrics and sunscreen are the essentials.

Tonight’s Dinner

With heat indices near 100°F, standing over a hot stove is nobody’s idea of fun. Set up a programmable slow cooker in the morning — chili, beef stew, or white bean soup are all ideal — and come home to dinner ready. An enameled cast iron Dutch oven works beautifully for a big pot of soup too. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Thursday mirrors today — sunny with a high near 86°F, slight storm chance around 2–3 PM ET, and east winds gusting to 18 mph. The upper-level ridge pattern is locked in, keeping South Florida hot and mostly sunny through the end of May with daily afternoon storm chances inland. Stay with the Miami weather forecast for the latest updates.
