Houston is starting Wednesday with an 88°F high and a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms — and with a tropical system pushing ashore, flash flooding is the real threat you need to plan around today.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service has Tropical Storm Watches in effect along portions of the Upper Texas Coast. A Potential Tropical Cyclone that emerged over the northwestern Gulf overnight is tracking northeastward up the Texas coast through this afternoon before shifting toward the Texas/Louisiana border by early evening. That means heavy tropical rainfall of 2–4 inches across southern and coastal portions of the Houston metro, with localized totals possibly exceeding 5 inches. Storms are possible before 10 AM CT and likely again between noon and 1 PM CT. Northeast winds run 5 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph.

Flash Flood Risk — Stay Alert

This is the headline today. The National Weather Service warns of flash flooding through early this evening, especially near the coast. If you live near Brays Bayou, Buffalo Bayou, or any of the low-lying neighborhoods that flooded during Harvey, stay on high alert. Coastal flooding near Galveston and the Bolivar Peninsula is also possible through Wednesday evening. Never drive through standing water — turn around, don’t drown. With a tropical system in play, it’s also worth having a DARAN 288Wh Power Station just $90 for Prime Members charged and ready in case the grid hiccups overnight.

Game Day and Concert Weather Check

World Cup Match 23 — Portugal vs Congo DR is tonight at NRG Stadium. The roof helps, but storm-soaked roads and parking lots will slow everything down — build in extra travel time.

Houston Astros vs. Detroit Tigers at Daikin Park is an outdoor game, and weather delays are possible around first pitch. Pack a compact travel umbrella and a packable rain jacket. Get tickets on SeatGeek if you’re still hunting for seats, and show up ready in your Houston Astros jersey and Houston Astros fitted cap.

On Thursday evening, the Khalid: It’s Always Summer Somewhere Tour plays 713 Music Hall — indoors, no weather concerns. Also Thursday, Kali Uchis: For The Girls Tour with Mariah The Scientist hits The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, which is an outdoor amphitheater. Track Thursday’s afternoon forecast before heading north. Find tickets on StubHub and pick up a Kali Uchis t-shirt for the show.

Rainy Day Dinner

Wednesday is made for slow cooker cooking. Load up a programmable slow cooker with chili or beef stew before you leave and come home to dinner waiting. Prefer stovetop? An enameled cast iron Dutch oven handles a big pot of soup beautifully. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything delivered before dinner.

Next Few Days

Tonight clears to partly cloudy with a low near 79°F and only a 20% storm chance before 7 PM CT. Thursday flips the script entirely: near 93°F and mostly sunny, but with a heat index as high as 109°F. The National Weather Service is flagging hazardous heat building across southeast Texas through early next week. Do any outdoor work Thursday before 10 AM CT, and keep a Yeti rambler water bottle on you all day. The Astros host the Cleveland Guardians starting June 20 at Daikin Park — stay updated at the Houston weather forecast and check outdoor gear deals if you need to gear up for the bleachers.
