Houston is waking up to another soggy, storm-prone Monday, with a high near 88°F sliding back to around 83°F this afternoon as showers and thunderstorms move through — the National Weather Service puts the chance of rain at 80% today. If you’ve got outdoor plans, build in a backup: this is a day to keep the umbrella in the car and an eye on the radar, not a day to leave the lawn mower running past lunch.

Today’s Setup

A stalled boundary is parked right over Southeast Texas, tapping into deep tropical moisture — satellite-measured precipitable water values are running 2.1 to 2.2 inches, about as saturated as our atmosphere gets. The NWS Houston/Galveston office says the heaviest coverage of storms should hit late morning through early evening, so if you need a dry stretch, early morning before 10 AM CT is your best bet. Things should quiet down some tonight (low near 76°F, 60% rain chance), only for another round to fire up Tuesday with a high near 84°F and an 80% chance of more storms.

Rain, Flood Risk, Or Heat

This part matters most: both the NWS and the Weather Prediction Center have Southeast Texas under a Slight Risk (level 2 of 4) for excessive rainfall today and again Tuesday. Forecasters expect widespread totals of 1 to 3 inches, with isolated pockets — especially where storms train over the same spot — up to 5 inches possible. Low-lying, flood-prone areas like Meyerland, Braeswood, and stretches along Buffalo Bayou are the first places to watch for minor urban ponding and street flooding. If you’re driving through standing water anywhere in town, turn around — Houston’s Harvey history is a reminder that “just a little water” over the road is never worth it.

What To Wear Or Bring

Pack a packable rain jacket if you’re walking to work, school, or transit today, and toss a waterproof document bag in your bag if you’re carrying anything you can’t afford to get soaked. Commuters should consider a dash cam front and rear for extra peace of mind on flooded or low-visibility roads. With scattered power blips possible during heavier storm cells, the DARAN 288Wh Power Station, just $90 for Prime members this week, is worth a look as backup power for phones, fans, or a router.

Around Town This Week

No home games on the schedule the next few days, but two shows are worth planning around: Flatland Cavalry brings the Work of Heart Tour to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on July 18, and UniverSoul Circus rolls into Sam Houston Race Park on July 17. Grab tickets on SeatGeek before they’re gone, and gear up with a Flatland Cavalry t-shirt or Flatland Cavalry hoodie if you’re heading out to The Woodlands for the concert.

Tonight’s Dinner

With rain on and off all day, this is a good night to let a programmable slow cooker do the work — chili, beef stew, or a big pot of soup all fit the mood. An enameled cast iron Dutch oven works just as well if you’d rather simmer it on the stove. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Expect one more round of storms Tuesday before the pattern eases. The NWS forecast discussion notes a gradual drying and warming trend taking shape heading into the second half of the work week, so if today and Tuesday are washouts for you, save the outdoor plans for later in the week. For the latest, check the Houston weather forecast and browse outdoor gear deals before your next trip out.
