Houston is waking up to a muggy, partly cloudy Sunday morning with temperatures already near 79°F — and if you want any time outdoors today, use it now. The National Weather Service is calling for showers and thunderstorms likely after 10 AM CT, with a high near 93°F and a dangerous heat index as high as 106°F in areas that stay dry. This is textbook early-summer Bayou City weather: a brief clear window, then the Gulf throws everything at us. Bookmark the Houston weather forecast and keep reading.

Today’s Setup

Southeast winds at 5 to 10 mph are pumping Gulf moisture straight into the metro. NWS forecasters note isolated storms near the coast early, with coverage spreading inland by late morning and afternoon. The Weather Prediction Center has placed southeast Texas under a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall today — meaning locally heavy downpours and urban flooding are possible, particularly in flood-prone areas along Buffalo Bayou. New rainfall of a quarter to half an inch is forecast, with higher totals possible where storms train or cluster.

Best Window To Be Outside

That window is right now — aim to wrap up outdoor plans by 9 AM CT. Anglers heading to Galveston Bay or the surrounding bayous are in luck this morning. Load your waterproof fishing tackle bag, throw on a fishing hat with neck flap to cut that southeast glare, and get lines in the water before the clouds thicken. After 10 AM, it’s time to head inside.

Rain and Flood Risk

The 70% rain chance after mid-morning is nothing to shrug at. Any stronger cells could produce gusty winds and quick-hitting downpours. If your neighborhood floods with less than an inch of rain — and plenty of Houston neighborhoods do — having sandbags for flooding staged at the door is smart prep heading into what looks like an active week. For the latest on outdoor gear deals to weather the stretch ahead, we’ve got you covered.

Events This Week

Tonight, Buckethead plays House of Blues Houston — safely indoors, zero weather drama.

The Houston Astros host the Detroit Tigers at Daikin Park on Tuesday, June 16, and Wednesday, June 17. Both games carry storm chances, so check the radar before you tailgate. Gear up with a Houston Astros jersey or Houston Astros fitted cap, and Find tickets on StubHub if you still need seats.

Also on June 17: the FIFA World Cup brings Group K action — Portugal vs Congo DR — to NRG Stadium. Get tickets on SeatGeek for what could be one of the biggest matches Houston has ever hosted.

On June 18, Khalid: It’s Always Summer Somewhere Tour lands at 713 Music Hall, and Kali Uchis brings her For The Girls Tour to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion (an outdoor venue — watch the forecast Thursday). Grab a Kali Uchis t-shirt and Find tickets on StubHub for either show.

Grill Now, Beat the Storms

Your best shot at a great Sunday cookout is before noon. Burgers, grilled chicken, and corn on the cob all shine with a quick cook in the morning heat. A reliable instant-read meat thermometer takes the guesswork out of doneness, and a grill brush and scraper set keeps your grates in fighting shape. This week’s Pork Loin Under $1/lb deal is a great excuse to fire up the smoker early. Need the rest of your ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything delivered to your door before the first storm rolls in.

Next Few Days

Monday brings another 60%+ storm chance with a high near 86°F, and the National Weather Service expects scattered showers and thunderstorms daily through at least midweek. Stay hydrated, check on neighbors during any afternoon heat, and keep the Houston weather forecast handy — storm timing will keep evolving through the week.

Upcoming Home Games

Plan around the forecast — grab tickets, gear up, and see kickoff conditions.
