Houston wakes up warm and muggy today with a low near 79°F, but the story of the day is storms likely after 10 AM, a high near 91°F that actually falls to around 87°F by afternoon, and a heat index climbing as high as 105°F. If you’ve got errands, yard work, or a walk around Buffalo Bayou or Hermann Park on your list, get it done before mid-morning.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service in League City says another round of showers and thunderstorms is likely this afternoon as Gulf moisture (PWAT values 2.0-2.5 inches) combines with daytime heating. A diffuse backdoor front is also working in from the north, which forecasters say will actually steer storm motion back toward the coast later in the day. Chance of rain sits at 60% today and 60% again tonight, with a quarter inch or less of rain generally expected — but locally heavier totals are possible.

Best Window To Be Outside

Morning is your window. Before 10 AM, skies are only partly sunny with lighter storm coverage, making it the best stretch for a jog, fishing trip, or nine holes. If you’re headed to a spot along Clear Lake or Galveston Bay, a fishing rod and reel combo is worth having ready before the boats get rained off the water. Golfers at area courses should also plan to tee off early — the afternoon buildup isn’t the time to be holding Pinemeadow Golf hybrids under a lightning-capable sky.

Rain, Wind, Fire, Or Heat Risk

The NWS flags a marginal risk of excessive rainfall today and a slight risk Monday across Southeast Texas, with forecasters specifically citing an environment favorable for efficient warm-rain processes — meaning flash flooding is possible with the heavier cells, especially in low-lying and already-saturated areas. Given Houston’s flood history, keep an eye on radar and avoid driving through standing water. An emergency first aid kit in the car is smart to have on hand through this stretch.

What To Wear Or Bring

With heat index values near 105°F and humidity this high, light breathable layers beat anything heavy. Moisture absorbing closet packs are a small but useful upgrade for anyone dealing with the sticky air getting into closets and cars this time of year.

Check the full Houston weather forecast before you head out, and browse outdoor gear deals — including the Plano Double-Sided Tackle Box, just $14, a solid grab for a quick morning fishing window before the storms roll in.

Weekend & Upcoming Events

Looking ahead, UniverSoul Circus hits Sam Houston Race Park on July 17, and Flatland Cavalry brings the Work of Heart Tour to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on July 18 — grab tickets on SeatGeek now, and a Flatland Cavalry t-shirt or Flatland Cavalry hat makes a great show-day addition.

Tonight’s Meal Idea

With a break in the storms likely by evening, it’s still solid grilling weather — burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob. Keep an instant-read meat thermometer and a grill brush and scraper set handy for cleanup after. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Monday looks even wetter, with a high near 89°F and a 74% chance of showers and storms as better organized, sometimes heavy rain moves through. The NWS expects the wet pattern to continue into early next week before a gradual drying and warming trend takes hold by the second half of the work week.
