Houston is waking up to mostly cloudy skies this Sunday with a high near 86°F and a slight chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms — toss a compact travel umbrella in your bag before heading out.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service says a pattern change is underway as an upper-level low lifts out of the Texas Panhandle. The overall flood threat has eased compared to recent days, but any storm that fires up this afternoon can still drop rain fast. Spots near the bayous or neighborhoods that took a hit earlier this week could still see some street ponding. South winds of 5 to 10 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, will keep Gulf moisture pumping in. The storm chance is only around 20% — not a day-wrecker, but worth a radar glance before you commit.

Best Time To Be Outside

Your cleanest window is before 8 AM CT, when conditions are quietest. After that, isolated storm chances build through the afternoon before fading overnight. If you’re running Buffalo Bayou trails, teeing off at Memorial Park Golf Course, or hitting the farmers market, go early and wrap up by noon.

Astros at Daikin Park Today

The Houston Astros host the Athletics today (Sunday, June 7) at Daikin Park — an outdoor ballpark under those same partly-cloudy, potentially showery skies. A brief shower isn’t ruled out, so tuck a packable rain jacket into your bag. Represent with a Houston Astros jersey or Houston Astros fitted cap, and if you still need seats, Find tickets on StubHub or Get tickets on SeatGeek. Conditions aren’t severe — it’s a typical Houston June afternoon, nothing to cancel plans over.

Heat Is the Story This Week

Here’s the bigger deal: Houston is about to get very hot, very fast. Monday climbs to near 88°F with a heat index up to 102°F. The National Weather Service warns that by late in the week, highs could push into the mid-90s with heat index values in the mid-to-upper 100s — and overnight lows holding in the upper 70s to 80s means little overnight relief. Heat advisories are possible by next weekend. Hydrate early, limit strenuous outdoor work to morning hours, and check in on elderly neighbors. Rip current risk remains high through at least Monday at Galveston — stay out of the surf.

Coming Up: Charlie Puth, Taylorville & World Cup

Looking ahead to next weekend: the Charlie Puth: Whatever’s Clever! World Tour plays 713 Music Hall on June 13 (indoor — heat won’t be a factor). Grab a Charlie Puth t-shirt and Find tickets on StubHub before they’re gone. Also June 13, Taylorville — A Tribute to Taylor Swift hits the outdoor Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion — watch that forecast as the week heats up. Then June 14 brings Germany vs. Curaçao (World Cup Group E, Match 10) to NRG Stadium — Get tickets on SeatGeek now.

Slow Cooker Sunday & What’s Ahead

Cloudy skies and a chance of afternoon rain make today a perfect slow cooker day. Load up a programmable slow cooker with beef stew or a big pot of chili — set it before first pitch and dinner’s ready when you get home. An enameled cast iron Dutch oven works great for stovetop chili too. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything delivered to your door.

For the week ahead: Monday stays mostly cloudy with a high near 88°F and a heat index near 102°F. Storm chances fade as the week progresses — but the heat ramps up sharply toward the weekend. Stay updated at the Houston weather forecast and check outdoor gear deals to prep before it gets brutal.
