Houston is kicking off the weekend under a stormy sky, with a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms today and a high near 85°F — grab a compact travel umbrella before you walk out the door this morning.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service has storm chances building through the day, with the heaviest activity most likely between noon and 1 PM CT. An upper-level low near western Mexico is helping focus storm development while onshore Gulf flow keeps rich moisture streaming into Southeast Texas — which means any cell that fires will be an efficient rainmaker, capable of dropping a quarter inch fast. Parts of the Bayou City have already logged 1–3 inches over the past 24 hours, with a few spots near Galveston running even higher. If your neighborhood already took a soaking, watch the bayous closely and avoid low-water crossings.
Best Window To Be Outside
Your best chance at dry pavement is before 10 AM CT. Storm chances ramp up quickly through late morning and don’t ease meaningfully until after dark. Tonight improves somewhat — the National Weather Service drops the storm chance to around 30% before 7 PM CT, then mostly cloudy with a low near 76°F. If you have evening plans downtown, there’s a reasonable shot at staying dry.
Rain and Flood Risk
The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall across much of Texas and southern Oklahoma valid through Saturday morning. Anyone who lived through Harvey knows Houston’s drainage has limits, and the NWS notes that already-saturated areas could see additional rain become mostly runoff. Take street flooding seriously this weekend — turn around, don’t drown.
Weekend Plans: Astros, Rush Tribute, and More
The Houston Astros host the Athletics at Daikin Park on Saturday, June 6, with a 60% storm chance through the afternoon — the exact same setup as today. If you’re headed to the ballpark, tuck a packable rain jacket in your bag and throw on a Houston Astros jersey. A Houston Astros fitted cap will keep the rain off your face in the bleachers. Still need seats? Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub before they’re gone.
Saturday night, The Rush Tribute Project takes the stage at 713 Music Hall — indoors, no weather worries. Grab a The Rush Tribute Project t-shirt to wear to the show. Tonight (Friday), Jeff Dunham’s “Artificial Intelligence” tour stops at the Hobby Center, also indoors and a smart way to ride out the evening storms in comfort.
Rainy Day Dinner
A stormy Friday is the perfect excuse for comfort food. Load up a programmable slow cooker with chili or beef stew before you leave this morning and come home to dinner ready. Prefer stovetop? An enameled cast iron Dutch oven is ideal for a big pot of soup. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
The wet pattern isn’t going anywhere soon. The National Weather Service expects scattered to occasionally numerous storms through Saturday and into Sunday, with highs holding in the mid-80s and overnight lows near 76–77°F. Keep tabs on the Houston weather forecast for updates as the weekend unfolds. If afternoon storms have you thinking about backup power, the DARAN 288Wh Power Station is just $90 for Prime Members — worth a look. Find more wet-weather essentials in our outdoor gear deals.
