Detroit is baking under a 97°F high today with a Heat Advisory in effect until 8 PM ET, and Canadian wildfire smoke has EGLE issuing an Air Quality Alert on top of it — so today’s move is simple: get outside early, then get somewhere cool.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service says heat index values could climb as high as 102°F this afternoon as that smoke plume settles over Southeast Michigan during the late morning and afternoon hours. Winds stay light out of the northwest around 7 mph, which won’t do much to clear the haze. The Area Forecast Discussion notes a weak backdoor cold front could trigger a few isolated showers or thunderstorms after 5 PM, mainly affecting areas toward Detroit Metro and Willow Run — chances are low, but if you’re headed to Belle Isle or the riverfront this evening, keep half an eye on the sky.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning is your window. If you’re mowing the lawn, walking the RiverWalk, or getting in a round before the heat peaks, aim for before 11 AM. By midafternoon, the combination of 97°F heat and smoke-hazy air makes outdoor exertion rough on anyone with asthma or heart issues.
Rain, Wind, Fire, Or Heat Risk
This is a heat and air-quality day more than a storm day — the Heat Advisory and the wildfire smoke are the headline. Overnight, temperatures only ease to around 72°F with lingering smoke and a slight chance of storms. Thursday actually looks better for outdoor plans: sunny, 93°F, with smoke clearing after 9 AM and 0% rain chance.
What To Wear Or Bring
Light, breathable layers and SPF 50 sunscreen are non-negotiable today. If you’re near the water at Belle Isle or hitting a pool this weekend, grab a quick dry swim trunks or women’s swimsuit, and the 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge with Cooler is a smart, cheap way to cool off. An insulated tumbler 30oz keeps drinks cold for hours in this heat, and if you’re heading to an evening show, mosquito repellent spray is worth tossing in the bag once the sun goes down.
Speaking of evening shows — Sarah McLachlan plays the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill tonight, and Kelly Price & Chico Debarge take the stage at The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre, both outdoor venues where that 97°F heat will still be lingering at showtime. Grab tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub if you’re going, and plan for the heat like it’s still daytime. Looking ahead, Melanie Martinez brings her HADES tour to Little Caesars Arena on July 18 — indoor and air-conditioned, a nice contrast if you want a break from the heat. A Melanie Martinez t-shirt makes a good souvenir if you’re headed.

Next Few Days
Thursday brings relief from the smoke with sunny skies near 93°F, dipping to around 70°F Thursday night. Friday warms back to near 90°F, and the NWS is watching increasing shower and thunderstorm chances moving in Friday into Saturday, so keep weekend plans flexible.
