Detroit’s high near 88°F today, but the real story is the scattered thunderstorms moving through this afternoon and evening, some capable of damaging wind gusts, according to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac office. Whether you’re at Belle Isle, along the riverfront, or headed to Comerica Park, plan around the storm window and skip yardwork until it clears.

Today’s Setup

Isolated showers are possible before 11 AM ET, then scattered showers and thunderstorms build between 11 AM and 5 PM ET, with west-southwest wind at 5 to 12 mph. Temperatures actually fall from 88°F toward 86°F in the afternoon as the activity moves in. The NWS forecast discussion flags a low-confidence but real chance that a more organized cluster tracks into the area, with damaging winds to 70 mph the main concern this afternoon into this evening.

Best Window To Be Outside

Morning into midday, before 11 AM ET, is your calmest stretch for dog walks, mowing, or errands. A second round of showers and storms is possible tonight along the approaching cold front, roughly 10 PM to 4 AM ET, with tonight’s low around 68°F and a 57% chance of rain. Tuesday clears out fast behind the front — scattered showers wrap up before 9 AM, then it’s partly sunny with a more comfortable high near 80°F and north-northwest wind gusting to 21 mph.

Rain, Wind, And Flash Flood Risk

The Weather Prediction Center has placed the Great Lakes region, including Detroit, under a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall today into tonight, with tonight’s rainfall potentially totaling a half to three-quarters of an inch. That’s enough for localized ponding on low-lying streets, so avoid flooded roadways after dark. Keep a packable rain jacket or compact travel umbrella handy if you’re out this evening — nothing worse than getting caught mid-thunderstorm without one.

Tigers Homestand And This Week’s Shows

The Detroit Tigers host the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park today, tomorrow, and Wednesday. Today’s game falls right in the storm window, so tailgaters should watch the radar into early evening; Tuesday’s matchup looks much calmer behind the front. Grab a Detroit Tigers jersey or Detroit Tigers fitted cap for the stands, and if you still need seats, Find tickets on StubHub or Get tickets on SeatGeek. Over at Saint Andrew’s Hall, Faouzia brings her Film Noir Tour Tuesday night, and Acrisure Amphitheater hosts Dirty Heads and 311 the same evening — both should have drier conditions than tonight’s front passage.

What To Wear Or Bring

Humid and stormy today calls for a packable rain jacket over anything you had planned outdoors, plus waterproof hiking boots if you’re on the trails at Belle Isle. Tuesday’s cooler, breezier air is a good excuse for a light layer instead.

Tonight’s Dinner

With storms rolling through, this is a soup-and-stew kind of night. A programmable slow cooker makes an easy beef stew or big pot of chili while you wait out the weather, or reach for an enameled cast iron Dutch oven for the same job on the stovetop. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Once the front clears early Tuesday morning, dry and slightly cooler air takes over for the middle of the week, per the NWS discussion — a solid stretch for anything you’ve been putting off outside, from mowing to catching Wednesday’s Tigers-Orioles finale at Comerica Park.
