Detroit, get ready for a soggy stretch: today brings a high near 85°F with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, easing back to around 83°F by afternoon as the rain moves through. If you’re headed downtown, to Belle Isle, or along the riverfront before 10 AM ET, keep an umbrella handy — that’s when the first wave of storms is most likely, according to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac office.

Today’s Setup

NWS forecasters note patchy, locally dense fog will linger through early morning, especially south of the city, before burning off quickly after sunrise. A weak shortwave tracking across southern Michigan this afternoon will tap into building instability, favoring isolated to scattered storms rather than one big line. Deep-layer shear is modest, so forecasters expect disorganized, short-lived cells, though they’re watching for a highly localized strong wind gust with any robust storm. Winds stay light, out of the south-southwest at 2 to 9 mph.

Best Window To Be Outside

Mornings look drier before the midday buildup, so an early Belle Isle walk or a lawn-mowing session ahead of 10 AM ET is your best bet. Tonight cools to near 69°F with another chance of showers and storms, mainly before 10 PM ET, though coverage should thin out after sunset. Saturday repeats the pattern — partly sunny with a high near 87°F, then a weak cold front sparks more storms between 2 and 4 PM ET, with gusts up to 21 mph out of the west-southwest.

Rain And Wind Risk

The severe weather threat stays very low both days, per the Area Forecast Discussion, but the on-and-off nature of the showers makes a packable rain jacket worth tossing in the car or bag. Saturday’s gustier winds could rattle anything left loose outside — a garden flag pole heavy duty is a smart upgrade if yours has been leaning after past storms.

Weekend Events And Gameday Weather

Chris Stapleton’s All-American Road Show hits Ford Field Saturday, August 8, and with the front’s storms likely wrapped up by evening, conditions should be clear for the show — get tickets on SeatGeek and grab a Chris Stapleton t-shirt before you head down. Jerry Seinfeld plays the outdoor Acrisure Amphitheater that same night, so plan around the afternoon storm window. Tonight, Tori Amos performs at the Fox Theatre Detroit — a dry, indoor option if you’d rather skip the rain chance altogether. Looking further out, the Detroit Tigers host the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park on August 14.

Dinner Idea

With rain in and out most of the day, this is a slow cooker chili or beef stew kind of Friday. A programmable slow cooker or an enameled cast iron Dutch oven makes it easy to have dinner ready whenever the last storm clears. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Temperatures stay seasonable through the weekend, mostly in the 80s, with isolated to scattered storm chances continuing into Saturday night before better shower and storm coverage builds Monday as a stronger system arrives.
