Denver is starting Wednesday with wall-to-wall sunshine and a high near 90°F — gorgeous on paper, but the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the plains east of I-25, making fire safety the headline story across the Front Range today.
Today’s Setup
A cold front pushed through the Denver area overnight, but don’t expect much temperature relief — that comes later. NWS forecasters note the mid-level air mass is significantly drier than Tuesday, when clouds and a shear zone undercut the forecast. Today’s setup is cleaner: full sun, downslope winds developing by midday, and high confidence in that 90°F peak. SSW winds run 3 to 16 mph with gusts as high as 28 mph by afternoon.
Fire and Wind Danger
This is the part of the forecast that matters most today. Critical fire weather conditions are expected across the eastern plains, with gusts of 25 to 40 mph on the flats and up to 50 to 60 mph in the mountains. Wind-prone corridors near I-25 north of Fort Collins are especially exposed. No outdoor burning, no fire pits, nothing with an open flame in dry grass or foothills terrain.
Use today as a home fire prep check. Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher home in the kitchen and garage, test your smoke detector combo pack, and if you live on the urban-wildland interface, build or refresh a go bag emergency evacuation kit. An N95 respirator mask smoke is also worth keeping on hand — smoke from grassland fires can reach the metro quickly when winds are this strong. A fire blanket kitchen stored near the stove is another easy layer of protection.
Best Window To Be Outside
Early morning is your sweet spot. Hit Washington Park, Sloan’s Lake, or City Park before 10 AM while temps are still in the comfortable range. The combination of afternoon heat and gusty winds makes extended outdoor time unpleasant and risky in dry areas. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child plays tonight at the Buell Theatre — fully indoors, no weather worries.
Thursday: Cold Front Relief and Rockies Baseball
A potent cold front tonight drops overnight lows to around 56°F, and Thursday arrives refreshed — sunny skies, a high near 80°F, and NE winds 5 to 12 mph with gusts to 22 mph. It’s the nicest day of the workweek by a wide margin.
The Colorado Rockies host the Chicago Cubs at Coors Field on June 11 under those ideal conditions. Low-80s and light winds make for perfect baseball and tailgating weather. Grab a Colorado Rockies jersey and Find tickets on StubHub if you still need seats.
Next Few Days
Friday warms back to near 92°F with light ESE winds — another hot day. The bigger story develops over the weekend: the National Weather Service is signaling a more substantial cooldown starting Sunday, with a better chance of showers and storms. If you’re planning I-70 mountain runs or hiking, Sunday onward is worth watching closely. Rod Stewart plays Red Rocks Amphitheatre on June 15 — check back as that weekend forecast sharpens.
Skip the Stove Tonight
Ninety degrees is not a cook-a-hot-meal day. Smoothie bowls, a cold Thai noodle salad, or a build-your-own wrap bar are the move. A high-powered blender handles smoothies, chilled soups, and frozen drinks with ease. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Stay cool, keep an eye on fire conditions east of town, and enjoy what should be a beautiful — if smoky-horizon — Denver Wednesday.
