Chicago is waking up to a warm, unsettled Wednesday with a high near 78°F and a real threat of afternoon thunderstorms — some of which could turn strong. If you’re heading out today, morning is your safest window.
Today’s Setup
A mid-level trough is sweeping through the Upper Midwest, dragging a cold front toward the metro. The National Weather Service says a few stray showers are possible this morning, mainly north of I-88 toward the Wisconsin state line. The bigger story kicks in after 2 PM CT: dewpoints climb into the low-to-mid 60s and conditions become ripe for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Forecasters note the atmosphere will be amply sheared — mid-level winds running 45–50 knots — which means some storms could become organized and potentially strong. Activity is expected to wind down between 10 PM and midnight CT, leaving mostly cloudy skies and a low around 64°F overnight.
Best Window To Be Outside
Get your outdoor tasks done before noon. A walk along the Chicago Lakefront Trail, a run through Lincoln Park, or a morning errand all look fine before lunch. After 2 PM CT, keep a close eye on weather alerts.
White Sox fans: the Chicago White Sox host the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field today and that afternoon storm window is a real concern. Tailgating could get interrupted. Wear your Chicago White Sox jersey, grab your Chicago White Sox fitted cap, and absolutely tuck a compact travel umbrella in your bag. A packable rain jacket takes up almost no space and could save the day between innings.
Rain and Storm Risk
Precipitation chance sits at 50% today and 52% tonight. The National Weather Service isn’t forecasting excessive rainfall for the Chicago area specifically, but any organized storm cluster this afternoon could deliver a quick downpour. Turn on weather alerts before you head south to Bridgeport. Waterproof hiking boots are smart if you’re walking the stadium concourse or navigating lakefront paths that pool fast after rain.
This Weekend’s Events
Thursday clears out beautifully — partly sunny, high near 74°F, NW wind at 5–10 mph, just 11% rain chance. Best outdoor day of the stretch. The weekend lineup is stacked: Josh Groban with special guest Jennifer Hudson hits Allstate Arena on Saturday, June 27 — indoors, no worries. Ed Sheeran’s LOOP Tour lands at Soldier Field on June 27 under what should be drier, warmer conditions. And Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire light up the United Center on Friday, June 26 — snag a Lionel Richie t-shirt for the show and grab tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub while seats last.
Rainy Day Dinner Tonight
This is the perfect excuse to dust off the programmable slow cooker. Load it up with chili or beef stew this morning and come home to something warm and ready. Prefer stovetop? An enameled cast iron Dutch oven makes a deeply satisfying pot of soup on a stormy evening. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything delivered before dinnertime.
Next Few Days
Thursday is the gem. After that, the National Weather Service warns of hotter, more humid conditions building into early next week. Enjoy those comfortable mid-70s while they last — summer is about to remind Chicago who’s boss. Keep tabs on the Chicago weather forecast as the heat builds, and check outdoor gear deals if you want to gear up for the warmer stretch ahead.
