Chicago Weather Wednesday: Sunny, 89°F With Heat Index Near 100

Chicago, IL is heating up under sunny skies today (Wednesday, July 15) with a high near 89°F, and the National Weather Service says heat index values could reach 96 degrees this afternoon — with forecasters’ discussion noting readings could climb to 100 to 105 away from Lake Michigan. Get outdoor plans done early, hydrate often, and lean on the lakefront breeze if you need relief.

Today’s Setup

A strong upper-level high pressure system is parked directly over the region, according to the NWS Chicago/Romeoville office, keeping today nearly as hot as Tuesday. Winds stay light out of the north-northeast around 5 mph with gusts to 10 mph, and there’s no rain in sight through tonight, with lows only easing to around 76°F overnight — muggy enough that AC units away from the lake breeze will be working overtime.

Best Window To Be Outside

Morning through midday is your best stretch before the afternoon heat index climb. It’s good golf weather if you tee off early, especially on lakefront courses catching a bit more breeze. By evening, the immediate lakefront in Lincoln Park and Grant Park runs noticeably cooler — a great time for a walk, or to cool off with the 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge with Cooler Just $24 on Amazon if you’re headed to the water.

Heat, Smoke And Storm Risk

No severe weather threat is in play for Chicago today, and there’s no excessive rainfall risk in our area. The bigger story is smoke: the NWS says low-level wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada is forecast to surge south out of Wisconsin overnight, reducing visibility Thursday generally along and northeast of Interstate 90. Thursday’s high eases to 83°F with a slight 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Games, Concerts And What To Wear

Loose, breathable layers and sunscreen are the move — this is classic Chicago summer weather. Tonight, Noah Kahan brings The Great Divide Tour to Wrigley Field, while Meghan Trainor’s The Get In Girl Tour hits United Center — pick up a Meghan Trainor t-shirt and Find tickets on StubHub if you’re headed downtown. Chicago Fire FC hosts Vancouver Whitecaps at Soldier Field on Friday, July 17, and the NWS discussion flags increasing storm chances that day, so tailgaters should watch the radar before kickoff and pack a Chicago Fire FC scarf along with a corn hole game set. The Cubs welcome the Minnesota Twins to Wrigley Field on Saturday, July 18, another day when storm chances build later in the afternoon and evening.

Tonight’s Dinner And Next Few Days

With temperatures this warm and dry, tonight’s a grill night — burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob are hard to beat. An instant-read meat thermometer takes the guesswork out of doneness, and a grill brush and scraper set keeps the grates ready for the next cookout. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door. Looking ahead, the NWS expects the heat to hold through the week with highs in the 80s to low 90s and overnight lows in the 70s, plus a few storms possible Thursday, increasing storm chances Friday, and another round late Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening.
