Chicago wakes up to one of the nicest days of the month: mostly sunny skies and a high near 72°F on Wednesday — a great excuse to get outside before a backdoor cold front reshapes the forecast tonight.
Today’s Setup
Inland neighborhoods like Logan Square and Wicker Park will see the warmest readings, climbing to near 72°F this morning. Along the lakeshore — Lincoln Park, Navy Pier, the Museum Campus — a lake breeze moves inland around midday, nudging temperatures back toward 64°F by afternoon. North winds stay light at 5 to 10 mph and rain chances are effectively zero (1%). The National Weather Service notes that the dry airmass in place locally will keep any distant storm activity well north of the state line.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning through early afternoon is your sweet spot. The 606 Trail, Millennium Park, and the lakefront path are all calling. Golfers and gardeners, this is your day — light winds, full sunshine, and comfortable temperatures. Browse our outdoor gear deals if you need to restock before the long weekend.
Lake Michigan Beach Warning
Hold off on the beach this week. The National Weather Service warns of building waves and dangerous currents at southern Lake Michigan beaches from late this evening through Thursday night. Montrose Beach and Rainbow Beach are not safe for swimming — stay out of the water.
Allergy and Wind Alert
Once tonight’s backdoor cold front sweeps through, north winds ramp up to 10–20 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph, stirring tree and grass pollen across the metro. A saline sinus rinse Neti pot kit is smart after any time outdoors. A hypoallergenic pillow cover set can also reduce overnight exposure when counts are running high. Thursday brings sunny skies but a noticeably cooler 60°F with NNE gusts to 25 mph — jacket territory.
White Sox at Rate Field
The Chicago White Sox host the Minnesota Twins today at Rate Field — and the forecast couldn’t be better for South Side baseball. Low-to-mid 70s at first pitch, full sunshine, a barely-there breeze. Grab a Chicago White Sox jersey and a Chicago White Sox fitted cap before you head down. Need seats? Find tickets on StubHub or Get tickets on SeatGeek. The Sox then welcome the Detroit Tigers starting Friday, May 29 for a Memorial Day weekend series.
Tonight and the Weekend Ahead
Heading to the A$AP Rocky – Don’t Be Dumb World Tour at the United Center tonight? Dress in layers — temperatures slip into the upper 50s by showtime and that north wind will have some bite on the walk from the parking garage. On Saturday, May 30, country fans have Cody Johnson at Allstate Arena — a Cody Johnson t-shirt is the perfect thing to wear to that one.
Grill Tonight
Near-perfect grilling conditions — fire up the backyard for burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob. Keep a grill brush and scraper set and an instant-read meat thermometer close by for perfect results. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Thursday drops sharply to near 60°F with NNE gusts to 25 mph — a classic Chicago backdoor cold front reminder that May isn’t done. Friday rebounds to 72°F with light east-northeast winds. The National Weather Service expects generally warm and dry conditions through early next week, making Memorial Day weekend look very promising.
