Chicago is heading into a hot, stormy Wednesday with a high near 86°F — morning conditions are excellent, but be ready to take cover by 3 PM CT. Check the Chicago weather forecast for updates as the day unfolds.
Today’s Setup
It’s a textbook summer day building along Lake Michigan: warm, humid air streaming up from the south ahead of an approaching cold front. Mostly sunny skies and temperatures will climb to near 86°F with south-southwest winds running 5 to 20 mph and gusts as high as 35 mph — the Windy City earning its reputation. Lincoln Park, the lakefront path, and Millennium Park are all in play this morning. Get your outdoor time in early.
Storm Timing and Flood Risk
The National Weather Service says showers and thunderstorms become likely after 3 PM CT, with activity continuing through overnight. This is more than a passing shower: the Weather Prediction Center has placed Chicago in a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall, with storm rainfall rates of 2–3 inches per hour possible given the anomalously high atmospheric moisture in place. Expect a quarter to half an inch through tonight.
Thursday is the bigger threat. NWS forecasters are flagging it as the day of greatest severe weather concern — potential for all hazards including tornadoes, damaging hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding. Storms could arrive as early as 1 PM CT. If you’re near areas prone to flooding on the South Side or West Side, keep close watch on flash flood warnings throughout the day.
White Sox Game Day at Rate Field
The Chicago White Sox host the Atlanta Braves at Rate Field today, June 10, and storm timing makes everything. Early-game conditions should be fine; a later start could run into delays. Wear a Chicago White Sox jersey for the tailgate and keep a Chicago White Sox fitted cap handy — it doubles as rain protection if the skies get moody. Need seats? Get tickets on SeatGeek before the gates open.
Thursday Concerts: Plan Ahead
Thursday’s outdoor shows fall directly in the storm window. Mumford & Sons play Wrigley Field on June 11 — right during the peak severe weather period. Check for updates before heading to Wrigleyville. Jimmy Eat World: 25 Years of Bleed American also hits Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island on June 11. For both, a packable rain jacket and compact travel umbrella are non-negotiable — browse outdoor gear deals if you need a quick upgrade. Prefer staying dry indoors? The Don Toliver: Octane Tour at the United Center on June 11 is the storm-proof pick of the week.
Next Few Days
When the afternoon thunder rolls in, it’s a natural cue to start a slow dinner. Load a programmable slow cooker with chili before the 3 PM storm window and it’s ready when things calm down. An enameled cast iron Dutch oven works equally well for beef stew or a big pot of soup. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Tonight: storms likely through 3 AM CT, low around 70°F, gusts to 30 mph, and up to three-quarters of an inch of additional rain possible. Thursday: another hot day near 87°F with the week’s most significant severe weather threat — stay weather-aware and monitor warnings closely. Then relief: Friday and Saturday turn dry and noticeably cooler, per the National Weather Service. A much calmer stretch to look forward to.
