Chicago weather today brings scattered rain showers early, with conditions clearing by midday and temperatures reaching only near 57°F—cool for early May.

A cold front cleared the area early this morning, but the National Weather Service is tracking a band of showers moving eastward from Iowa that will likely affect the I-80 and I-88/290 corridors through late morning. The heaviest rain chances look to stay south of the city, closer to the Highway 24 corridor and downstate Illinois, but Chicago’s north and northwest neighborhoods could still catch some light showers between now and 10 AM CT. Rain amounts should be minimal—less than a tenth of an inch—but bring a packable rain jacket if you’re heading out early, especially if you’re planning to catch the Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds game at Wrigley Field today. Game-day conditions will be mostly cloudy with occasional showers possible through mid-morning, so grab a Chicago Cubs jersey or Chicago Cubs fitted cap to layer up under your rain gear.

After 10 AM CT, conditions improve. Skies will clear to mostly cloudy by afternoon, and while it stays cool at around 52°F, at least the rain moves out. If you had plans to mow the lawn or tackle yard work, hold off until Wednesday when it’ll be partly sunny and slightly warmer. Fishing at Lincoln Park or along the lakefront? Today’s breezy conditions (gusts up to 15 mph from the west-southwest) might make it choppy, but Wednesday looks calmer.

Tonight, temperatures drop to around 45°F under mostly cloudy skies—bring a heated blanket if you’re planning an outdoor evening, or consider moving any outdoor plans inside. Speaking of which, rainy days like this are perfect for comfort food. A slow cooker chili or hearty beef stew is ideal when you don’t want to spend much time cooking. You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door—grab an enameled cast iron Dutch oven if you need one, and a programmable slow cooker makes weeknight dinners effortless.

Looking ahead: Wednesday turns partly sunny with highs near 53°F, and the trend improves toward the weekend. If you’re planning to catch the Peso Pluma Dinastia Tour at the United Center on Thursday, expect much better weather—temperatures will moderate closer to average. Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub, and grab a Peso Pluma t-shirt, Peso Pluma hoodie, or Peso Pluma hat to complete your concert look.

Stay dry this morning, Chicago—better weather’s on the way by Wednesday.
