Chicago weather today brings showers and thunderstorms through the afternoon, with a high near 70°F and scattered rain expected before 2 PM CT.

If you’re heading out around the city—whether to catch the White Sox take on the Washington Nationals at Rate Field or catching a show at CIBC Theatre—pack a compact travel umbrella and dress in layers. The National Weather Service says the best chance for heavier storms will be early, with activity shifting east of the Chicago area by mid-to-late afternoon. Winds will be light to moderate from the southwest (10–15 mph), so it won’t be a blustery day, just a wet one.

The rain should taper off by evening, and temperatures will drop to around 46°F overnight. If you had plans to grill or set up a portable propane grill for tailgating, hold off until Saturday—conditions will be much better then.

For those heading to indoor events like the Akaash Singh comedy show or the Puscifer concert at The Chicago Theatre, or Lewis Capaldi at the United Center tomorrow night, you can grab tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub. Tomorrow evening should be much clearer, though cool at around 57°F.

This weekend looks fantastic. Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high near 54°F—perfect for the Chicago Fire FC vs. Sporting Kansas City 5K at Soldier Field or a walk through Lincoln Park or along the lakefront. Sunday will warm into the low-to-mid 70s with dry conditions, ideal for outdoor activities before a system moves in early next week.

Since you’ll be stuck indoors for much of today, it’s the perfect time to prep comfort food. A hearty slow-cooker chili or beef stew is ideal for rainy days—set it this morning and dinner’s ready when you get home. You’ll want a programmable slow cooker for hands-off cooking, or if you prefer stovetop, an enameled cast iron Dutch oven works beautifully for stews. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Looking ahead: Saturday turns beautiful and cool, Sunday climbs into the 70s, but keep an eye on Monday—the National Weather Service is tracking a system that could bring scattered severe thunderstorms and heavy rain to the region, with possible localized flooding. We’ll have more details as we get closer, but it’s something to monitor if you’re planning outdoor activities early next week.
