Chicago is in for a soggy, thundery Thursday, with the high near 82°F before scattered showers and storms push afternoon temperatures back down to around 80. If you’ve got plans today, build in a backup — the National Weather Service says these storms can bring locally heavy rain and gusty winds, so it’s worth checking radar before you head out.
Today’s Setup
According to the National Weather Service Chicago/Romeoville office, a mesoscale convective vortex tracking in from central Iowa is expected to push an uncapped, storm-ready atmosphere into the area after 9-10 AM. That sets up a first round of isolated-to-scattered showers and storms from mid-morning through early afternoon, with forecasters putting the odds at 30 to 40 percent, followed by more scattered storms into the evening. Winds run west-southwest around 5 to 10 mph.
Rain, Wind, And Flash Flood Risk
The NWS is flagging two things to watch: locally heavy rainfall (a quarter to half an inch today, with another half to three-quarters of an inch possible overnight) that could cause flooding, especially where storms stall or redevelop over neighborhoods hit hardest by last weekend’s rain — and gusty to locally damaging wind gusts this afternoon and evening, with the greatest threat south of I-80. If storms roll through while you’re outside, get indoors.
White Sox Game Day At Rate Field
The Chicago White Sox host the Boston Red Sox tonight, July 9, at Rate Field, right in the window for those afternoon-evening storms — tailgaters should watch the sky and have a rain plan. The Sox then open a series against the Athletics Friday, July 10 through Sunday, July 12, with Friday looking much better (fog clearing by mid-morning, high near 75). Grab tickets on SeatGeek or find tickets on StubHub, and gear up in a Chicago White Sox jersey or Chicago White Sox fitted cap.
Best Window To Be Outside
Skip today for the ballfield or the lakefront and aim for Friday instead — just areas of fog before 10 AM, then a comfortable, mostly dry high near 75. The NWS is calling for mainly dry, warmer weather this weekend into early next week, which is your window for Lake Michigan fishing (a Plano Double-Sided Tackle Box is a smart, cheap addition to the tackle bag right now) or floating near the shoreline with a 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge. It’s also a good stretch for concertgoers heading to the Tyler Childers concert at Wrigley Field or Windy City Smokeout at the United Center, both July 12, plus Meghan Trainor at the United Center July 15.
What To Wear Or Bring
Today calls for a rain jacket and an umbrella you can stash in a bag. With damaging gust potential this afternoon and evening, it’s not a bad idea to have a DARAN 288Wh Power Station charged up in case a strong storm knocks out power briefly.
Tonight’s Dinner
Given the on-and-off storm chances, grilling works best in a dry lull — check radar before you fire up. It’s still great weather for burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob; an instant-read meat thermometer takes the guesswork out of doneness, and a grill brush and scraper set keeps cleanup quick between storm rounds. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Expect scattered storm chances to wind down tonight, with Friday turning drier and mild near 75 after morning fog. From there, the weekend into early next week looks mainly dry and warmer — good news for Sox games at Rate Field and lakefront plans alike.
