Chicago is waking up to a hazy Thursday, with wildfire smoke drifting in off Lake Michigan and a high near 80°F under partly sunny skies. If you’ve got outdoor plans, the good news is rain chances stay low today (just 10%), but the National Weather Service in Romeoville says visibility will keep dropping through the afternoon, especially near the lakefront and along and northeast of I-90.
Today’s Setup
Overnight lows only dipped to around 74°F, and today’s high near 80°F comes with a light northeast wind at 5 to 10 mph. The smoke is riding in on a lake-enhanced boundary that NWS forecasters say is “gradually working its way westward and towards the surface,” so the haze may thicken as the day goes on rather than clear out.
Best Window To Be Outside
Lincoln Park trails and lakefront paths are fine for a morning walk or run before the smoke settles in further. If you’re sensitive to air quality, an N95 respirator mask smoke is worth keeping in the car or gym bag today. Golfers, this is still a playable day — mild temps, light wind, and a mostly dry radar make it decent golf weather at courses across the region. If your irons have seen better days, Pinemeadow Golf hybrids and a golf bag stand lightweight are practical upgrades before you tee off.
Heat And Storm Risk Building
The bigger story is Friday and Saturday. Highs jump to near 90°F Friday with heat index values as high as 98, plus a 43% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. NWS forecasters note warm, humid conditions continue into Saturday, with another round of storms possible late Saturday afternoon into evening. Keep outdoor plans flexible for the weekend and have a backup indoor option ready.

Tonight’s Dinner
With mild, dry evening air, it’s a great night to fire up the grill for burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob. An instant-read meat thermometer and a grill brush and scraper set make cleanup and doneness a lot easier. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Expect lingering haze today and tonight, then a hot, humid stretch Friday into Saturday with highs near 90°F and scattered storm chances both days. If the heat has you eyeing the lakefront this weekend, a 2-Person Intex Floating Lounge with Cooler is a solid grab for beach days.
