Chicago is in for a hot, sticky Monday, July 27, with highs near 88°F, a heat index climbing to a brutal 102°F, and a real chance of thunderstorms — some potentially severe — arriving tonight, so get outdoor plans done early and keep a backup for evening.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service’s Chicago/Romeoville office let the Dense Fog Advisory expire at 8 AM CT for areas near the Fox Valley and northwest Indiana. Through midday, forecasters give only a 15-20% chance of an isolated strong-to-severe storm, with strong capping keeping the atmosphere lidded. The bigger story arrives with a cold front late this afternoon into evening — the NWS is targeting roughly 6-10 PM CT as the best window for showers and storms, with a 30% chance of rain and a quarter- to half-inch possible. Any storm that fires could bring damaging winds and large hail.

Best Window To Be Outside

Get outside before early afternoon while skies are only mostly cloudy — your best stretch before temperatures actually fall to around 83°F later as the front approaches. Save yard work or a walk along the lakefront for the morning hours, ahead of the evening storm risk.

Rain, Wind, And Swim Risk

South southwest wind runs 10-15 mph with gusts to 30 mph today, shifting northwest behind the front to 10-20 mph with gusts to 25 mph tonight. The Weather Prediction Center has the Chicago area in a marginal excessive rainfall risk today, so a quick downpour could cause localized street ponding. More concerning: the NWS warns of dangerous swimming conditions — large waves and strong currents — developing late tonight through early Wednesday along Lake Michigan. Skip North Avenue Beach and Oak Street Beach if you’re tempted to cool off.

What To Wear Or Bring

Pack a packable rain jacket or compact travel umbrella for sudden downpours, and swap cotton for moisture wicking undershirts men to handle the heat index. Heading to Rate Field for the Chicago White Sox vs. New York Yankees series today and tomorrow (July 27-28)? Grab a Chicago White Sox jersey or Chicago White Sox fitted cap, and Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub — tailgating will be steamy, so hydrate and watch the sky for that evening storm window. ZAYN plays United Center tonight, an indoor show where weather’s a non-issue; a ZAYN t-shirt makes a fun addition, and you can Get tickets on SeatGeek.

Check the full Chicago weather forecast for updates, and browse outdoor gear deals before the next round of storms rolls through.

Dinner Tonight

With storms in the forecast, this is a stay-in, slow-cooker kind of night — chili, beef stew, or a big pot of soup fits perfectly. A programmable slow cooker or enameled cast iron Dutch oven does the work while you watch the radar. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Tuesday flips the script: partly sunny, high near 74°F, north wind 15-20 mph, and 0% rain chance — great for mowing (the EGO Power+ Battery Deal is worth a look for spring lawn gear) or catching NE-YO & Akon at Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre or Jimmy Buffett at Ravinia. Tuesday night stays clear and cool near 69°F, setting up a comfortable stretch after tonight’s storms clear out.

Upcoming Home Games

Plan around the forecast — grab tickets, gear up, and see kickoff conditions.
