Charlotte, NC starts today mostly cloudy and warm with a high near 88°F, but showers and thunderstorms become likely by mid-afternoon and continue into a soggy, flood-prone night — so knock out your outdoor plans this morning and keep rain gear handy the rest of the day.

Today’s Setup

According to the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg forecast office, overnight convection is clearing out early, which lets skies destabilize through the morning. That sets the stage for another round of storms this afternoon: a slight chance of showers develops between noon and 1 PM ET, then thunderstorms become likely from about 4 to 5 PM ET and continue into the evening. Rainfall of a quarter to half an inch is possible, with wind staying light out of the north at 0 to 6 mph.

Best Window To Be Outside

If you’re walking Freedom Park, hitting the greenway, or running Uptown errands, get it done before lunch. Forecasters note thinning cloud cover and building instability (near 2,000 J/kg of energy) through midday, so the atmosphere gets primed for storms right as the afternoon rolls on. By evening, showers and thunderstorms are likely area-wide, with a low near 68°F overnight.

Rain, Wind, Fire, Or Heat Risk

The Weather Prediction Center has placed the Charlotte area in a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall today, warning of locally heavy rain rates and isolated flash flooding given a messy, slow-moving convective setup. The NWS forecast discussion also flags isolated severe storms and localized flash flooding as possible each day through Monday. A backdoor front sagging into the area tonight brings a real cooling trend — Monday’s high only reaches near 78°F, well below normal for mid-July, before hot weather returns during the latter half of next week.

What To Wear Or Bring

A packable rain jacket earns its keep today, and a compact travel umbrella is worth tossing in the car or bag before you head out. If you’re near Lake Norman after the rain clears, water levels and current can run stronger than usual — good time to check gear before your next trip out; a Plano Double-Sided Tackle Box keeps tackle organized if you’re heading that way once storms move on. Charlotte Events This Week

Heading Uptown for Megan Moroney’s Cloud 9 Tour at Spectrum Center on Tuesday, July 14? It’s indoors, so tonight’s storms won’t be a factor — grab tickets on SeatGeek. Bigger picture: Usher Raymond & Chris Brown bring The R&B Tour to Bank of America Stadium on Friday, July 17. With the NWS calling for a return to seasonably hot, more typical summer conditions by the latter half of next week, tailgating conditions should be much improved from today’s soggy setup — find tickets on StubHub and grab an Usher Raymond & Chris Brown t-shirt before the show. Monster Jam roars into Spectrum Center Saturday, July 18.

Tonight’s Dinner

With rain sticking around into the evening, this is a comfort-food night — slow cooker chili or a big pot of beef stew fits the mood. A programmable slow cooker or an enameled cast iron Dutch oven makes it easy. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Expect continued storm chances and a flash flood watch-worthy setup into Monday, with a much cooler high near 78°F. Monday night dips to 66°F before the pattern gradually dries out and warms back to seasonable summer heat by the latter half of next week.
