Boston is in for a gorgeous 82°F Sunday — but if you’re heading to the Esplanade, Castle Island, or anywhere outdoors, wrap up your plans by 2 PM ET before scattered showers and thunderstorms arrive in the afternoon.
Today’s Setup
Mostly sunny skies dominate the morning with comfortable northwest winds at 5 to 10 mph — a rare gift for a summer Sunday. The National Weather Service notes very little vertical wind shear in the atmosphere today, keeping severe weather risk low. Still, enough atmospheric energy exists for pop-up afternoon storms, with the greatest risk toward northeast Massachusetts and near the coast, where a sea breeze front could act as a focus point for activity.
Best Window To Be Outside
Head out before noon and you’re golden. Storm chances develop between 3 PM and 5 PM ET, then taper off by 7 PM. Tonight clears out nicely with a comfortable low near 62°F and light westerly winds.
Heavy Rain Warning: Monday Into Tuesday
Here’s the bigger story this week: a low pressure system will bring widespread, soaking rain to Greater Boston Monday afternoon through early Tuesday. The National Weather Service puts the probability of 1 or more inch of total rainfall at 70 to 80 percent across the region, with 2 or more inches possible in some areas. If your lawn needs mowing or you have outdoor work, today is the day.
Mumford & Sons play an outdoor show at Fenway Park on Monday, June 22 — right as the heaviest rain arrives. Seriously consider a packable rain jacket and compact travel umbrella if you’re going. You can Find tickets on StubHub if you’re still looking.
Events This Week
Tuesday, June 23 is packed. The Strokes bring their Reality Awaits North America tour to TD Garden — grab a The Strokes t-shirt and Get tickets on SeatGeek before they sell out. Also Tuesday, RÜFÜS DU SOL takes the stage at Fenway Park — conditions should be improving by then, but watch the forecast closely. And the 2026 World Cup Match 45 (England vs. Ghana) kicks off at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough — pick up Official team gear on Fanatics and get there early.
Later in the week, the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on Thursday, June 25. Midweek looks drier and more comfortable — great conditions for a Sox-Yankees showdown. Grab Official team gear on Fanatics and Find tickets on StubHub.
What To Wear Or Bring
For today, toss a compact travel umbrella in your bag after noon just in case. For Monday’s commute and that Fenway concert, a packable rain jacket is essential. If you’re planning trail time at Blue Hills or Middlesex Fells later in the week, waterproof hiking boots will handle the soggy aftermath of Tuesday’s rain.
Dinner Tonight
With potential storms rolling through this evening, it’s a perfect night for slow cooker chili or hearty beef stew. Load up your programmable slow cooker before you head out this morning and dinner’s ready when you walk in. Or go classic with an enameled cast iron Dutch oven on the stovetop. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
- Monday: High near 80°F, heavy rain and thunderstorms arriving by afternoon, 100% chance of storms overnight. Expect 1–2+ inches possible.
- Tuesday: Wet into the morning, gradual clearing by afternoon.
- Wednesday–Thursday: Drier air returns with seasonable temperatures — the best stretch of the week.
- Next weekend: Rain chances return by the end of next week, per the National Weather Service.
