Atlanta is in for a dangerous Thursday, with a high near 84°F and a Flash Flood Watch in effect through early Saturday morning — grab a compact travel umbrella, stay off flooded roads, and limit time outside once storms fire up late morning.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a Flash Flood Watch covering the Atlanta metro and much of central Georgia. The driver is the remnant circulation of Post-Tropical Cyclone Arthur, tracking northeast out of Louisiana with a plume of deep tropical moisture aimed squarely at North Georgia. NWS forecasters are warning of widespread rainfall totals of 2–4 inches, with locally higher amounts of 5 inches or more possible. A slight chance of showers kicks off between 9–11 AM ET, then showers and thunderstorms become likely from 11 AM through the afternoon and evening. Damaging wind gusts and a few tornadoes are also possible during this window.
Best Window To Be Outside
Before 9 AM ET — that’s your window. Once late morning arrives, conditions deteriorate fast. If you need to run an errand near Piedmont Park or walk the dog in your neighborhood, get it done early.
Flood and Severe Weather Safety
This is a life-safety weather day. Flash flooding is the top concern — never drive through a flooded road. The National Weather Service notes that soils across the region are already primed for runoff, meaning rapid rises are expected in creeks and drainage areas throughout the metro. A Wind Advisory runs from 6 PM ET Thursday through 8 AM Friday, with non-thunderstorm gusts exceeding 35 mph and overnight rain totaling 1–2 inches — isolated tree falls are possible across the area.
Storm-season prep tip: the DARAN 288Wh Power Station is just $90 for Prime members — smart insurance if tonight’s storms knock out the lights.
What To Wear Or Bring
Do not rely on a flimsy umbrella today — wind gusts up to 30 mph will flip it inside out. Pack a packable rain jacket instead; it handles wind and rain without the battle. Browse outdoor gear deals for more storm-ready options this season.
Braves and World Cup — Know Before You Go
World Cup Match 25 — South Africa vs. Czechia is at Mercedes-Benz Stadium today (June 18). The retractable roof is your lifesaver once you’re inside, but getting there through storm-soaked streets takes extra time. Use MARTA and build in a buffer.
Atlanta Braves vs. San Francisco Giants at Truist Park faces a 90% rain chance tonight — delays or postponement are very possible. If you’re committed to the Battery, an Atlanta Braves fitted cap and an Atlanta Braves jersey will keep you repping the Chop through whatever the sky throws at you. Find tickets on StubHub and monitor the Braves’ official postponement policy before heading out.
The Braves then open a homestand series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Juneteenth (June 19) — drier skies ahead for that one.
Dinner Tonight: Slow Cooker Weather
This is textbook stay-in cooking weather. Load up a programmable slow cooker with chili before the storms hit and dinner takes care of itself by evening. Prefer something heartier? An enameled cast iron Dutch oven turns out a beef stew worth coming home to. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Juneteenth (Friday, June 19): A significant improvement — high near 85°F with only a 30% chance of afternoon showers and partly sunny skies. A much better day for outdoor Juneteenth celebrations across the metro. The Braves open the Brewers series at Truist Park. Check the Atlanta weather forecast for updated timing as the system clears.
Saturday and beyond: Conditions continue to improve as the remnant system pushes east. Full weekend details coming as we get closer.
