Atlanta wakes up to a hot, sticky Saturday with a high near 91°F and heat index values climbing as high as 100 degrees before a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms moves in after 3 PM ET — get your outdoor plans wrapped up by early afternoon and drink water like it’s your job.
Today’s Setup
The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City says a very humid, tropical airmass is parked over Georgia, with atmospheric moisture near climatological max. That’s why the heat index is running well above the actual air temperature. A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon to 8 PM today for portions of east and central Georgia where heat index values could breach 105 — metro Atlanta sits close enough to that zone that it’s worth treating today like advisory conditions even if you’re just north of the official line. Overnight lows only dipped to around 74, and winds stay light out of the northwest at 5 to 10 mph.
Best Window To Be Outside
Morning through early afternoon is your window. If you’re teeing off at a course near Piedmont Park or casting a line on the Chattahoochee, get out at sunrise — a golf rangefinder and a live bait aerator bucket are smart companions before the heat and any pop-up storms arrive. A fishing hat with neck flap earns its keep in this sun. By 3 PM, the NWS says scattered thunderstorms become possible, some potentially strong with damaging gusts and heavy rainfall capable of localized flash flooding, so keep an eye on the radar if you’re still outside.
Rain, Wind, Or Heat Risk
Rain chances sit around 20% today, but forecasters note any storm that fires could be locally intense. The bigger risk today is heat — heat index near 100°F is dangerous for extended outdoor exertion. Runners heading to Piedmont Park should consider a hydration running vest and an earlier start time.
Game Day & Tonight’s Shows
The Atlanta Braves host the Texas Rangers at Truist Park today. Tailgating should be fine through early afternoon, but bring shade and water, and watch for that post-3 PM storm chance before first pitch. Grab an Atlanta Braves jersey or Atlanta Braves fitted cap, and you can Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub. Downtown, J. Cole brings The Fall-Off Tour to State Farm Arena tonight — indoors, so weather’s a non-issue once you’re inside, though it’ll be muggy getting there. Look for a J. Cole t-shirt, J. Cole hoodie, or J. Cole hat. Sunday night, Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire play State Farm Arena too.
Tonight’s Dinner
With a hot, dry evening on tap before any storms, this is prime grilling weather — burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob all work well. An instant-read meat thermometer keeps you food-safe, and a grill brush and scraper set makes cleanup painless. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Sunday runs even hotter, with a high near 93°F and storm chances rising to 40% after 2 PM as heat index values again approach 100. The NWS expects the hot, humid pattern — and triple-digit heat index readings — to persist into next week. For more outdoor gear picks, check our outdoor gear deals.
