Atlanta is heading into Memorial Day 2026 with a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms — move your cookouts inside, because today’s high near 79°F comes with a soaking. Check the Atlanta weather forecast for live updates throughout the day.
Today’s Setup
A stubborn surge of Gulf moisture has metro Atlanta locked in an unsettled pattern through the holiday weekend. The National Weather Service says rain showers are possible before 11 AM ET, thunderstorms develop through midday, and widespread storms are likely from around 1 PM ET through the evening. Overnight, an additional half to three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible on top of today’s quarter to half inch.
The Weather Prediction Center placed Atlanta under a Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall. A Flood Watch remains in effect through late tonight for north Georgia generally northwest of I-85 — covering Cobb and Paulding counties, which have already picked up 5–8 inches of rain over the past few days. Any neighborhood that gets repeated storm activity could see 2–3 more inches quickly.
Flash Flood and Severe Weather Risk
Flash flooding is the primary threat today. If water is moving across a road — near Buckhead, the Westside, or anywhere along metro creek corridors — turn around. The National Weather Service also warns that strong storms capable of localized damaging wind gusts are possible this afternoon, particularly from 1–7 PM ET. Stay weather-aware and monitor NWS alerts during that window.
Best Window To Be Outside
There isn’t a great one. The calmest stretch may come before 9 AM ET, but even then showers are possible. Your Memorial Day picnic at Piedmont Park or Stone Mountain needs to move inside. If you’re heading to the UniverSoul Circus at the Old Turner Field Grey Lot today, check with organizers about weather delays — it’s directly in the storm track. If you must venture out, pack a compact travel umbrella and wear a packable rain jacket. Browse outdoor gear deals if you need to stock up before more storms hit mid-week.
Events This Week
This rainy stretch was made for indoor venues. James Blake’s Trying Times Tour plays the Tabernacle on Wednesday, May 27 — a dry indoor show that’s a perfect mid-week escape. Grab tickets on StubHub. MGK’s Lost Americana Tour hits Lakewood Amphitheatre (outdoor) on Friday, May 29 — watch the forecast as conditions are forecast to gradually improve by late week. Echo & the Bunnymen close out the weekend at the Tabernacle on Saturday, May 30; pick up an Echo & the Bunnymen t-shirt to wear to the show.
Rainy Day Dinner
Skip the grill entirely and reach for the slow cooker. Load up a programmable slow cooker with chili or beef stew before the afternoon storms peak and dinner will be waiting when you’re ready. Prefer something hands-on? Pull out an enameled cast iron Dutch oven and simmer a big pot of soup. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything delivered before dinnertime.
Next Few Days
Tuesday brings another 80% chance of storms with a high near 81°F before temperatures dip back to around 77°F by afternoon. The National Weather Service says the wet, Gulf-fed pattern stays locked in through most of the week. Keep a board game collection handy for the long indoor stretches. Watch for gradual improvement by the back half of the week — but keep that umbrella in your bag through at least Wednesday.
