Atlanta, GA is in for a soggy Friday, with a high near 87°F, a 91% chance of showers and thunderstorms, and a flood watch in effect for north Georgia through early Saturday morning — so if you have outdoor plans today, build in a backup and keep an eye on radar.

Today’s Setup

A stalled front sitting along and north of I-20 is squeezing out repeated rounds of rain, and the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City says the heaviest totals so far have tracked along a line from Marietta to Athens. Expect 1 to 3 inches area-wide with isolated spots topping 4 inches before the front finally clears out Sunday. The Weather Prediction Center has a moderate risk of excessive rainfall posted for the Southeast today, with precipitable water values reaching 2.2 to 2.4 inches — the kind of setup that can produce sudden, heavy downpours even when the sky looks only partly cloudy.

Rain Timing And Flash Flood Risk

Showers and storms are ongoing before 5 PM ET, with more storms redeveloping into the evening. Temperatures actually fall through the afternoon, from a morning high near 87°F down to around 83°F ET later in the day. Tonight’s activity is likely between 7 PM and 2 AM ET, with a low around 73°F and another quarter to half inch of rain possible. If you’re near a creek, low-lying underpass, or the Chattahoochee, avoid driving through standing water tonight — that’s exactly the flash-flood scenario the watch is meant to cover. Saturday looks better, with only a 40% chance of storms mainly between 1 and 4 PM ET and a high again near 87°F.

Best Window To Be Outside

Piedmont Park walkers and Beltline commuters should aim for the first hour or two after sunrise today, before storms fire up again. Anyone hoping to mow the lawn should also plan for early morning, or wait until Saturday morning ahead of that afternoon storm chance.

Tonight’s Concerts, Rain Or Shine

If you already have plans, the rain doesn’t have to ruin them. Daniel Caesar - Son Of Spergy Tour plays State Farm Arena tonight, a solid indoor pick when storms are rolling through — Get tickets on SeatGeek and grab a Daniel Caesar t-shirt before you go. Over at VyStar Amphitheater At The Bridge, Trey Songz & Ro James is an outdoor show tonight, so pack a poncho and check radar before you leave. Looking a few days out, Noah Kahan: The Great Divide Tour hits Truist Park Monday — Find tickets on StubHub and pick up a Noah Kahan t-shirt if you’re headed out.

Tonight’s Dinner: Stay In And Let It Simmer

On a night like this, comfort food wins — a slow cooker chili or a big pot of beef stew is the move while the rain keeps falling outside. A programmable slow cooker or an enameled cast iron Dutch oven makes it easy to set it and forget it. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Saturday trends drier through the afternoon before the front finally exits on Sunday. After that, the National Weather Service is watching a building ridge of high pressure that sends temperatures and heat indices climbing again by Monday — so enjoy this break from the heat while the rain lasts.
