A Grand Folk Dance Celebration Indoors

The XVI Latvian Song & Dance Festival brings its Grand Folk Dance Concert to Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Sunday, July 5, with the show kicking off at 4:00 PM ET. This is a once-in-a-generation gathering of Latvian folk dance tradition, and once you’re through the doors, the show goes on rain or shine — Van Andel Arena is fully indoors and climate controlled.

Getting There Is the Only Weather Concern

Here’s the thing to actually plan around: the trip to the arena, not the show itself. The National Weather Service is calling for showers and thunderstorms through the morning, then a chance of more storms rolling back in through the afternoon, with a 75% chance of precipitation and a high near 86°F. South wind at 5 to 9 mph won’t cause problems, but the rain chances mean the walk from your car to the arena doors could be a wet one.

Give yourself extra time for parking — downtown Grand Rapids lots fill up fast for big arena events, and nobody wants to be jogging through a downpour to make a 4:00 PM start. If you’re parking a few blocks out, keep something waterproof on hand for that stretch outside, even though you won’t need it once you’re inside.

What to Bring (and Not Bring)

Once you’re through security, the forecast is irrelevant — focus on the performance. Van Andel Arena, like most large indoor venues, keeps the AC running, so it can feel noticeably cooler inside than the muggy 86°F outside. A light layer or jacket is worth tucking into your bag so you’re comfortable for the full show.

Check Van Andel Arena’s bag policy before heading out, since arenas typically restrict bag size and contents at entry — better to know before you’re standing in line.

Rep the Festival

This is a rare stateside celebration of Latvian folk dance tradition, so if you want to mark the occasion, keep an eye out for festival merchandise at the venue itself to commemorate the night.

Bottom Line

Storms may roll through Grand Rapids on and off throughout the day, but they won’t touch the Grand Folk Dance Concert once you’re inside Van Andel Arena. Plan for a wetter-than-usual walk in, dress in layers for the AC, and settle in for the show.
