Kavakos Plays Tchaikovsky at Dana Auditorium
Violinist Leonidas Kavakos joins the Eastern Festival of Music on Saturday, July 18, for an evening of Tchaikovsky at Dana Auditorium on the Guilford College campus in Greensboro. Curtain is 7:30 PM ET, and once you’re in your seat, the program is the only thing that matters — Dana Auditorium is fully indoors, climate-controlled, and unaffected by whatever’s happening outside.
Getting There
The trip in is where the weather actually matters. The National Weather Service has Saturday running near 94°F with mostly sunny skies through the afternoon, but a chance of showers and thunderstorms develops between 2 PM and 5 PM and lingers into the evening. If you’re heading to campus after work for the 7:30 PM start, don’t be surprised by a passing shower or rumble of thunder on your way from the parking lot to the auditorium doors. Wind should stay light, 2 to 10 mph out of the south-southwest, so this isn’t a windy-umbrella situation — just a “grab a light layer or a compact rain jacket for the walk” situation.
Give yourself extra time for parking on the Guilford College campus, especially if you’re arriving close to showtime — festival crowds plus a stray shower can slow down the walk from your car. Aim to be inside well before 7:30 PM so you’re not rushing to your seat once the lights start to dim.
What to Bring
Once you’re through the doors, this is a classical concert, not an outdoor festival — leave the sunscreen and rain gear in the car. Theaters and concert halls often run on the cooler side once the AC is working against a 94°F day outside, so a light layer for your seat isn’t a bad call, especially if you tend to run cold during a long program.
Check your tickets for the venue’s bag policy before you go, and plan to arrive with enough buffer to find parking, get inside, and settle in before Kavakos and the orchestra take the stage. With the heat and storm chances confined to the outdoors, the biggest weather decision you’ll make all night happens between the parking lot and the lobby.
