Pianist Byron Janis once called Rachmaninoff “a pianist’s composer,” and Saturday night, Greensboro gets to hear why. The Eastern Festival of Music brings its Dichter Plays Rachmaninoff program to Dana Auditorium at Guilford College on July 11 at 7:30 PM ET. Dana Auditorium is an indoor venue, so once the lights dim, the weather outside won’t touch the performance.

Getting There Is the Tricky Part

The National Weather Service has Saturday pegged for a high near 91°F with a 70% chance of precipitation — a slight chance of rain showers between 11 AM and 2 PM, building to showers and thunderstorms likely by the afternoon and evening. That timing lines up uncomfortably close to a 7:30 PM curtain.

Translation: plan your drive to Guilford College assuming wet roads and the possibility of a downpour between your car and the auditorium doors. West wind stays light at 3 to 8 mph, so it’s not a windy-umbrella situation — it’s more of a “don’t dawdle in the parking lot” situation. Give yourself extra buffer time in case storms slow traffic on the way in, and budget a few minutes to walk from the lot without getting soaked.

Once You’re Inside

Dana Auditorium is climate-controlled, so the 91-degree heat outside won’t follow you in. Concert halls do tend to run on the cooler side thanks to air conditioning working overtime against summer heat — a light layer or sweater over your evening attire isn’t a bad call, especially if you tend to run cold sitting still for a two-hour program.

Practical Tips

  • Arrive early. Between the storm risk and typical festival-night parking around Guilford College, aim to arrive well before 7:30 PM to find parking and get settled without rushing.
  • Check bag policies before you leave home. Venues hosting classical performances often restrict large bags, so travel light.
  • Keep an eye on the sky during the drive, not during the show. Once you’re in your seat for Rachmaninoff, the forecast is irrelevant.

Bring your ticket, a little patience for the roads, and maybe a light jacket for the AC. Rachmaninoff will take care of the rest.
