Tampa–St. Petersburg is looking at a warm Saturday with isolated showers and thunderstorms arriving by mid-afternoon, followed by a wet night ahead of a cooler Sunday.

Here’s what to expect: Temperatures will climb to around 88°F this morning and early afternoon, but a cold front pushing down from the north will bring increasing storm chances starting around 3 PM ET. The National Weather Service forecasts isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms between 3 PM and 5 PM ET, with additional storm activity possible into the evening. Wind gusts could reach 23 mph out of the south-southwest, creating hazardous conditions on the water.

Beach & Water Safety Alert

If you’re planning a trip to Clearwater Beach, Treasure Island, or any of our Gulf Coast beaches, take note: the National Weather Service has issued a high risk for rip currents today and Saturday night. The strong southwesterly winds combined with the approaching front will create dangerous surf conditions. Even strong swimmers should stay out of the water or exercise extreme caution. If you do venture in, stay near lifeguard stations.

Boaters heading out from Tampa Bay or the Nature Coast should be aware that hazardous boating conditions are expected, especially with gusts up to 23 mph. If you’re considering a fishing trip, this morning before 2 PM ET offers the best window—winds are still light, and conditions are mostly clear. A spinnerbait assortment is perfect for targeting redfish and snook in the shallows before the storms roll in.

Saturday Night: Soaking Rain Expected

Things get wetter after sunset. The National Weather Service expects a 71% chance of precipitation Saturday night, with showers and thunderstorms developing before 10 PM ET, then scattered activity between 2 AM and 4 AM ET Sunday morning. Rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 0.75 inches are possible, with localized heavy rates of 1–2 inches per hour in the strongest storms. While the Weather Prediction Center has issued only a marginal risk of excessive rainfall for our area, poor drainage areas and urban zones could see brief ponding or runoff. Keep an eye on low-lying neighborhoods around downtown Tampa and St. Petersburg.

Game Day & Evening Plans

If you’re heading to the Tampa Bay Rays vs. San Francisco Giants at Tropicana Field on Saturday, May 2nd, you’re in luck—the game is indoors! Perfect weather for catching the action. Grab a Tampa Bay Rays jersey or Tampa Bay Rays fitted cap to show your support, and Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub if you’re still looking for seats. The Rays play again Sunday against the Giants, and Sunday’s weather will be much better for any pre-game festivities, with temperatures around 83°F and only a 17% chance of rain.

Sunday Outlook & Grilling Time

Sunday is your day to regroup. The cold front will have cleared through, and we’ll see partly sunny skies with a high near 83°F and lighter northeast winds. This is prime time to fire up the grill for burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob. An instant-read meat thermometer and grill brush and scraper set will help you nail perfect results. If you need supplies, you can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for Sunday’s cookout delivered to your door.

Looking ahead, Monday and early next week will remain mild and pleasant before our typical late-spring pattern reasserts itself. Stay weather-aware through Saturday night, and we’ll be back to our usual sunny, warm May weather soon.
