San Antonio is looking at a warm Wednesday with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms, with highs near 90°F and cooler temperatures expected by afternoon.

Here’s what’s happening: A cold front is pushing through North Texas this morning and will work its way down through the San Antonio area during the day. The National Weather Service forecasters are watching this system closely—they’ve issued a Level 1 risk for both severe storms and excessive rainfall across our region. While most storms should stay isolated, the atmosphere has enough juice (meteorologists call it “anomalous precipitable water”) to support strong to severe thunderstorms with large hail and locally heavy rain as the primary threats.

The best window for storm activity is after 10 AM CT through early evening. If you’re planning to be outdoors near the River Walk, at one of the military bases, or out in the Hill Country, keep an eye on the sky and have a plan to get indoors quickly if storms develop. The good news? Most places will stay dry, and rainfall amounts should be light (less than a tenth of an inch) where storms do pop up.

Tonight and Thursday: Expect a 20-30% chance of lingering showers and thunderstorms before 7 PM CT tonight, with lows dropping to around 69°F. Thursday will be cooler and less stormy—mostly cloudy with highs only reaching the mid-80s and just a 20% chance of afternoon storms. The cooler air filtering in behind the front will feel refreshing after the recent warmth.

What to do today: If you had outdoor plans, they’re not ruined—just be flexible. Golfers should carry a light rain jacket; the adidas Samba Spikeless Golf Shoes Half Off at $42 would be perfect for wet conditions. Fishermen should still get out to favorite spots—early morning before 10 AM CT is your safest bet, and a fishing sun shirt UPF 50 will keep you protected. If you’re heading to the Spurs playoff game (West Conf Qtrs: Trail Blazers at Spurs Rd 1 Game 7 on May 2nd at the Frost Bank Center), that’s Saturday—plenty of time for this system to clear out. Grab your Official team gear on Fanatics and Get tickets on SeatGeek when you’re ready.

Festival-goers heading to the iHeartCountry Festival Presented by Capital One on May 2nd should note that Saturday looks dry and pleasant. Bring a hydration backpack and a foldable camping chair for comfort.

Grilling weather ahead: Once this system moves through, Thursday afternoon looks perfect for firing up the grill. Burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob are calling your name. Grab an instant-read meat thermometer and a grill brush and scraper set to get your grill ready. Need fresh ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next 3 days: Drier and cooler Friday through Sunday, with highs in the low-to-mid 80s. Perfect conditions for outdoor activities and those concerts coming up at the Moody Center and Frost Bank Center. Check our San Antonio weather forecast for updates as the system moves through.
