New York City weather today is sunny and mild at 50°F, but rain showers will likely arrive after 11 PM tonight—so plan your outdoor activities for the daytime and bring an umbrella if you’re heading out after dinner.

Tuesday is shaping up to be a pleasant spring day across all five boroughs. This morning, we’re starting crisp and clear with temperatures in the mid-30s—a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 AM EDT for most areas outside of NYC and the immediate suburbs, so if you have sensitive plants or outdoor pipes, take precautions now. Bundle up for your commute on the subway or your walk through Central Park; a light jacket and maybe a fleece-lined beanie will do the trick.

By midday, sunshine dominates from Manhattan to the outer boroughs. South winds at 5 to 12 mph will keep conditions breezy but comfortable. This is perfect weather for the Mets-Twins game at Citi Field in Queens at 1 PM ET—bring sunglasses and sunscreen, and consider rechargeable hand warmers if you’re sitting in the shade on the third-base line. Tailgaters and fans heading to Yankee Stadium for the NYCFC match against FC Cincinnati on Wednesday should note that today’s conditions are ideal, but tomorrow’s game will be trickier (more on that below).

The weather pattern shifts dramatically after sunset. A weak frontal system tracking from the Great Lakes will bring widespread rain showers late tonight into Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service expects rain to become likely after 11 PM ET, with less than a tenth of an inch of rainfall expected. Temperatures will actually rise slightly overnight to around 47°F as warm air advection kicks in ahead of the front. If you’re heading to Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Wednesday evening, you’ll want to grab an umbrella—the rain should be mostly done by afternoon, but conditions will remain damp.

Wednesday morning commuters should expect wet subway platforms and slick sidewalks. Rain showers will likely continue before 2 PM ET, with another tenth to quarter-inch of rain possible. Highs will reach 55°F, so layer up—a heated vest works great under a rain jacket for those of us who run cold. By Thursday, the system moves offshore and conditions turn noticeably milder, with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s across the city.

Speaking of Thursday’s warmth, it’s the perfect night to fire up the grill or whip up a hearty baked pasta or pot roast to transition from tonight’s chilly evening into the mild stretch ahead. Pair it with hot chocolate for dessert—you’ll want something warm and comforting as the rain wraps up. Did you know you can order groceries on Amazon? Get everything you need for tonight’s dinner delivered straight to your door.

Looking ahead: The weekend outlook remains uncertain with potentially unsettled conditions, so stay tuned for updates. For now, enjoy Tuesday’s sunshine, prepare for tonight’s rain, and get ready for a beautiful Thursday.
