New York weather today brings partly sunny skies this afternoon with a high near 58°F, but don’t let that fool you—a strong frontal system is moving in fast, and tonight into Thursday morning will be wet and stormy across all five boroughs.
Here’s what to expect: Through this afternoon, you’ll see mostly dry conditions across Manhattan, the outer boroughs, and into Long Island, with just a slight 20% chance of light showers after 5 PM. Temperatures will actually fall from 58 to around 55°F by late afternoon as the cold front approaches from the west. Southeast winds at 5 to 13 mph will stay relatively calm.
But tonight is the story. Starting around 6 PM ET, rain showers will move in from western Orange County and the Hudson Valley, pushing east across the NYC metro. The National Weather Service forecasters are confident this will be moderate to briefly heavy at times through midnight across northern New Jersey and into portions of Manhattan and the Bronx before weakening as it tracks east toward Long Island and Southern Connecticut. Showers and thunderstorms will dominate through the night, with an impressive 93% chance of precipitation. Expect 0.5 to 0.75 inches of rain across the NYC metro, with some localized areas west of the city potentially seeing near an inch. Minor coastal flooding benchmarks may be touched across South Shore Back Bays and coastal Fairfield County this evening and Thursday evening, so monitor tide levels if you’re near Jamaica Bay or the East River.
Thursday morning the rain will quickly diminish from west to east as the front moves offshore and dry air settles in by mid-morning. Thursday itself will be cooler with a 50% chance of showers before 2 PM, highs near 61°F, and brisk north winds at 8 to 16 mph—decent conditions if you’re heading to see Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Thursday evening; bring a packable rain jacket just in case.
What to do today: Finish outdoor plans by 5 PM. If you’re planning to visit Central Park or the Hudson River Greenway, go early. Subway commuters should expect delays tonight due to wet conditions. If you’ve got the New York Yankees taking on Baltimore at Yankee Stadium on Friday, May 1st, expect much better weather—that game will be played in cool but dry conditions.
For tonight’s cozy indoor vibes, this is perfect weather for slow-cooker comfort food. A programmable slow cooker makes it easy to set chili or beef stew before work and come home to warmth. If you prefer stovetop cooking, an enameled cast iron Dutch oven is perfect for a big pot of soup. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Friday through the weekend looks excellent: mostly clear Thursday night, then cool and mainly dry Friday through Sunday with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. By early next week, temperatures trend milder.
Stay dry out there, neighbors.
