New York City is looking at a mostly sunny day today with a high near 61°F, making it a perfect window to get outside before a significant rain system moves in Wednesday night.

This morning will start pleasant across all five boroughs, with sunshine dominating through midday. Clouds will gradually increase as the afternoon progresses—that’s a cold front passing to our west, but don’t worry. The National Weather Service says any showers from that system will rapidly dissipate thanks to dry air aloft. You might see an isolated sprinkle north or west of the city, but it’ll be light and insignificant. Temperatures will actually fall slightly through the afternoon, dropping to around 59°F by evening, with southeast winds staying light at 2 to 10 mph.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy and cool, bottoming out around 51°F. If you’re heading to the Knicks playoff game against the Atlanta Hawks at Madison Square Garden this evening, you won’t need rain gear—just a light jacket. Grab Official team gear on Fanatics to show your support.

Here’s where the weather picture changes: Wednesday afternoon brings a slight chance of showers after 2 PM, but the real story unfolds Wednesday night into Thursday. A deep upper-level trough diving into the Great Lakes will spawn a low-pressure system that brings widespread rainfall to the area. The National Weather Service is forecasting 0.5 to 1.0 inches of rain—exactly what we need given the moderate drought conditions currently affecting parts of the city and surrounding areas. This rain will be beneficial for Central Park and the city’s green spaces.

Wednesday night through early Thursday morning, expect steady rain showers with winds gusting 10 to 14 mph from the southeast. If you have outdoor furniture or a pop-up canopy tent with weights set up in your yard or on a terrace, secure it now with a ratchet tie down strap kit or bungee cord assortment. The Yankees host Baltimore at Yankee Stadium on Friday (May 1st), so the rain should be clearing by then—excellent timing for baseball fans.

If you’re planning to catch the Hamilton (NY) show at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Wednesday evening, bring an umbrella. Find tickets on StubHub or Get tickets on SeatGeek to secure your spot.

Allergy alert: Spring pollen counts remain moderate, so if you’re sensitive, grab some Claritin non-drowsy allergy medication before heading out today. The southeast winds will continue pushing pollen our way through Wednesday.

Today is ideal for grilling, yard work, or a walk through Hudson River Park or along the waterfront in Brooklyn. If you’re thinking about outdoor fitness, an outdoor yoga mat works great on a day like this—just get out there while the sun’s shining.

For dinner tonight, a light pasta or stir-fry pairs well with this cool, spring weather. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door. Consider picking up fresh vegetables and a Stanley quencher tumbler to stay hydrated while you’re out.

Looking ahead: Rain clears Thursday afternoon, and we’ll dry out into the weekend, though there’s a low potential for an offshore low-pressure system to bring unsettled weather by Sunday. Keep an eye on the forecast.

Stay dry, New York!
