Houston weather today brings a mostly cloudy sky with a high of 89°F and a 30% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially north of I-10 from around 1 PM CT onward.

According to our National Weather Service colleagues, we’re in for an active couple of days. The setup is textbook spring instability: strong upper-level winds, abundant moisture (some areas north of I-10 could see near-record atmospheric water vapor), and a slow-moving frontal boundary adding lift. The National Weather Service discussion notes that while the highest storm chances are north of the Interstate, don’t be surprised if thunderstorms develop south of I-10 as well. A few of these storms could pack hail and damaging wind gusts, and localized flash flooding is possible—especially in areas that see sustained heavy rain.

If you’re planning outdoor activities around the Houston area today, keep an eye on the radar after lunch. Morning activities around Memorial Park, Hermann Park, or along the Buffalo Bayou are your safest bet. Golfers should consider an early tee time; if you do venture out later, a waterproof golf rain suit will keep you dry when those afternoon storms roll through.

Fishing enthusiasts have a decent window this morning before storms develop. If you’re heading out to the bays or local lakes, grab a crappie jig kit and get on the water early—conditions should be calm through early afternoon.

Tonight, expect mostly cloudy skies with a low around 72°F and a slight 22% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10 PM CT. Thursday looks similar, with a high near 84°F and another 28% chance of afternoon storms. But here’s the big story: a strong late-season cold front barrels in Friday and Friday night, bringing heavier rain and much cooler, breezy conditions in its wake. We’ll have more on that as we get closer.

Gameday note: If the Rockets Rd 1 Hm Gm 3 (If Necessary) against the Lakers happens Friday at Toyota Center, indoor conditions will be perfect—no weather concerns for that one.

Perfect grilling weather today (if storms hold off). Fire up your grill for burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken with corn on the cob. Grab an instant-read meat thermometer and a grill brush and scraper set to keep your equipment in top shape. For tonight’s dinner, consider marinating some tri-tip—we’ve got a great guide on how to smoke tri-tip like brisket for just $10 in pellet grill costs. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Stay weather-aware through Friday, neighbors. We’ll keep you posted on that strong front heading our way.

Looking ahead: Check back for our full Houston weather forecast as we track Friday’s system. And if you’re gearing up for outdoor season, don’t miss the deals on outdoor gear this week.
