Atlanta weather today brings a 52% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 79°F and south winds at 5 to 10 mph—but the real story unfolds tonight and into Wednesday morning.
Here’s what our friends at the National Weather Service are tracking: a decaying line of storms is pushing out of Tennessee and into northwest Georgia this morning, with the heaviest activity expected between 8 AM and 10 AM ET. While most of Atlanta should see only light to moderate rain, the National Weather Service has issued a Marginal Risk for severe weather across extreme northwest Georgia, with the potential for isolated damaging wind gusts, hail, and even an isolated tornado spin-up. The atmosphere becomes less favorable for severe weather the further south and east you go—so Buckhead, Midtown, and the Perimeter are looking at typical spring showers rather than anything dangerous.
But tonight is the bigger concern. An 85% chance of showers and thunderstorms moves in after 6 PM ET, with organized thunderstorms likely between 10 PM and 2 AM ET. The National Weather Service is forecasting 0.5 to 0.75 inches of rain tonight—locally higher in the most intense storms. If you’ve got outdoor plans at State Farm Arena for the Hawks vs. Knicks playoff game on Thursday, April 30th, don’t worry—that game is indoors. But if you’re planning to tailgate, grab a packable rain jacket and a compact travel umbrella beforehand.
Wednesday stays wet with a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms likely before 7 AM ET and again between 7 AM and 2 PM ET, with another 0.5 to 0.75 inches possible. Southwest winds gust up to 25 mph, so secure any outdoor items in Piedmont Park or around your home.
What to do today: If you’re heading to the Braves game against Detroit at Truist Park this evening, bring rain gear. Skip the lawn work—mowing in wet conditions damages grass. If you had outdoor plans, move them indoors or wait until Thursday afternoon when conditions improve.
Tonight’s dinner idea: Perfect weather for a warming meal. Throw together a slow cooker chili or beef stew—set it in the morning and come home to comfort food. A programmable slow cooker makes this effortless, and an enameled cast iron Dutch oven works beautifully on the stovetop if you prefer. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Looking ahead: Thursday clears out with highs near 80°F and much lower rain chances—great for the Hawks-Knicks game. Friday through the weekend stays seasonal in the 70s with decreasing rain chances. The drought that’s been plaguing Georgia won’t see meaningful relief from these storms, but at least we’re getting some moisture.
Stay safe out there, and keep an eye on local alerts if you’re in northwest Georgia.
