Gorgeous Thursday Turns Dangerous Friday: Here’s Your Game Plan
Today is your day to get outside—but be smart about fire risk in western Minnesota.
Thursday is shaping up to be absolutely beautiful: sunny skies, temperatures climbing to 80°F, and light winds to start the morning. It’s the kind of day that makes you want to fire up the grill, hit the golf course, or finally tackle that spring yard work. Go for it—just know that western Minnesota is under a Red Flag Warning due to critical fire weather conditions this afternoon.
Here’s what’s happening: Southerly winds will gust up to 30 mph across western Minnesota, combined with humidity levels dropping to just 15–25%. That’s a recipe for rapid fire spread if anything ignites. If you’re in that region, avoid any outdoor burning today. For the rest of us in the Twin Cities, it’s a perfect spring day—mow the lawn, fish the lakes, or head to Target Field early to catch some baseball. The Twins take on Cincinnati this weekend, and Thursday’s weather is ideal for tailgating if you grab tickets early.
Friday is when things get serious.
A very strong cold front is moving in, and it’ll bring showers and thunderstorms starting around noon. Temperatures will actually warm into the upper 60s and 70s before the front arrives, then drop 20–25 degrees in the afternoon as colder air rushes in. The National Weather Service is watching for a few storms that could turn severe, mainly east of I-35 toward western Wisconsin. We’re expecting 0.1 to 0.25 inches of rain, which isn’t excessive, but keep an eye on the sky after mid-morning. If you’re heading to the Twins game Saturday afternoon at Target Field, plan for much colder conditions—temperatures will be in the 30s and 40s, so bring a jacket.
The weekend: Cold and possibly snowy.
Friday night temperatures will plummet to around 31°F, and Saturday could bring some snow showers. Don’t worry too much—little to no accumulation is expected, but it’ll feel like we’re back in winter for a day or two. By Sunday, we’ll start to moderate again.
Here’s my advice: Enjoy Thursday fully. Get outside, tackle those outdoor projects, and grill up something hearty—maybe burgers or grilled chicken with fresh spring veggies. If you’re planning tailgate activities for the weekend games, grab a [[[folding canopy tent](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=folding+canopy+tent&tag=thedealdoppler-20)](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=folding+canopy+tent&tag=thedealdoppler-20)](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=folding+canopy+tent&tag=thedealdoppler-20) and a [[[rolling cooler with wheels](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rolling+cooler+with+wheels&tag=thedealdoppler-20)](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rolling+cooler+with+wheels&tag=thedealdoppler-20)](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rolling+cooler+with+wheels&tag=thedealdoppler-20) now; you’ll want them for those chilly Saturday conditions at the ballpark.
Keep your phone nearby Friday afternoon in case of storm alerts, and remember: if thunder roars, go indoors. Spring in Minnesota always keeps us on our toes!
Next 3 days: Sunny and warm today (80°), showers/storms Friday with falling temps (70→50°F), cold and possibly snowy Saturday (30s–40s).
