Atlanta is in for a stormy Sunday, with temperatures climbing to near 81°F and an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms ramping up through the afternoon — keep your packable rain jacket in the car and your plans flexible.

Today’s Setup

Expect a murky, overcast morning across the metro — low clouds are already draped over neighborhoods from Buckhead to Decatur. The National Weather Service says an MCV (a cluster of thunderstorms with its own rotation) is tracking northward out of the Gulf Coast and will push into North Georgia by this afternoon. Dewpoint temperatures in the low 70s and nearly 2 inches of precipitable water in the atmosphere mean any storm that fires can dump rain fast. The Weather Prediction Center has placed North Georgia under a Slight Risk for Excessive Rainfall today, with localized flash flooding possible wherever storms overlap or stall — watch low-lying roads and underpasses.

Best Window To Be Outside

Your cleanest window is before 11 AM ET. Rain showers are possible even then, but the widespread thunderstorm threat doesn’t ramp up until midday and peaks sharply between 2–5 PM ET. If you planned any outdoor chores — mowing, a walk around Piedmont Park, anything — get it done before lunch.

Flash Flood and Severe Storm Risk

Beyond flooding, the National Weather Service warns that water-loaded downbursts can produce locally damaging wind gusts, especially in more organized storm clusters arriving this afternoon and evening. There is no active SPC severe weather outlook for the area today, but stay weather-aware and have a shelter plan ready if you’re outdoors after noon.

Events: Braves Game and Birthday Bash

The Atlanta Braves host the Washington Nationals at Truist Park today (May 24) — and storms will be in the picture by game time. The heaviest rain is expected mid-to-late afternoon, so expect possible rain delays. If you’re heading to Cobb County, pack layers and give yourself extra time. Rock your Atlanta Braves jersey or Atlanta Braves fitted cap proudly, but leave room in the bag for rain gear. Still need seats? Find tickets on StubHub or Get tickets on SeatGeek.

The good news: Hot 107.9 Birthday Bash: 30th Anniversary Concert hits State Farm Arena tonight — indoors, so the storms won’t crash the party. A Hot 107.9 Birthday Bash t-shirt is the perfect look for the 30th edition of Atlanta’s biggest hip-hop celebration.

Rainy Day Dinner Idea

This is made-for-the-couch weather. Load up a programmable slow cooker in the morning with a batch of chili or beef stew and let it work all day — dinner takes care of itself. An enameled cast iron Dutch oven on the stovetop is equally perfect if you like stirring things yourself. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Memorial Day (Monday, May 25) doesn’t offer much relief — a 70% storm chance with another high near 81°F. The UniverSoul Circus at the Old Turner Field Grey Lot is an outdoor venue, so have a rain plan if you’re headed there. The National Weather Service warns of locally heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding potential each day through the week ahead. Keep checking the Atlanta weather forecast for updates, and browse outdoor gear deals if your rain kit needs a refresh before the week gets going.
